Garth Nix Wanted to Ground Massif in Science

The idea began with the striking image of a mountain range tearing itself out of the ground and rising into orbit. From there, Nix had to determine what the mountain was, why it would leave Earth and how humans might communicate with it.
That process led to the creation of the Massif avatars. These humanlike figures allow the massive alien beings to interact with people, although they may not reveal everything about the Massifs’ motives.
Nix also drew upon his interest in military history and his five years in the Australian Army Reserve. That experience helped inform the fear, pressure and loyalty shared by the members of a military crew facing danger together.
Is Massif Garth Nix’s First Science-Fiction Book?
