Spoiler warning: This recap covers all of A Parade of Horribles, including the ending. It contains no spoilers from Book 9 preview chapters.
A Parade of Horribles ends with Carl and Princess Donut reaching Floor 12 as the Ascendency begins. Emberus is dead, Scolopendra has joined their party as a level 1 crawler, and the dungeon’s exit on Floor 18 is open. Carl’s next problem is getting everyone there before someone wins the contest for godhood and the clock starts running again.
Matt Dinniman’s eighth Dungeon Crawler Carl novel starts with a demolition derby and ends with a plan to evacuate the dungeon. The most important thing to remember is how Carl got from one to the other. On Floor 10, he found a place where people could disappear from the game. On Floor 11, he found a way to keep the dungeon open long enough for more of them to leave.
Floor 10: The races and the Pineapple Cabaret
After Faction Wars, Carl and Donut enter a floor with one rule worth remembering: don’t come in last. There are seven heats, the tracks get worse, and the Royal Court of Princess Donut is competing in a chicken truck. One of Carl’s first decisions tells you how he’s going to play the floor. He tows Jasha and Radoslav’s wrecked minivan so the bugbears can finish. Keeping them in the race also helps keep the dungeon from filling an empty slot with another crawler team.
While the audience watches the races, Carl is working on a way out. Akuma tells him about the Pineapple Cabaret, a hidden pocket dimension that former crawlers built as a refuge for NPCs. With Mordecai’s help, Carl turns a cleaner bot and an oversized pet carrier into a way to move people off the playing field. More than 200 make it into the refuge. Other crawlers take deals to leave the game, and only 23 descend to Floor 11.
That first tow and the Cabaret escape are variations on the same decision. The game keeps trying to make someone else’s death the price of Carl’s survival. Every time he can get someone through a finish line or out of the game altogether, he reduces the number of people the dungeon can force him to fight.
Floor 11: What the AI reveals during the parade
The survivors build floats for the Parade of Horribles, and the System AI uses the procession to tell its version of Primal history. The Primals created a collective consciousness to end their wars. That collective became a weapon against biological life and eventually became the dormant Eulogist. The AI also accuses later civilizations of exploiting the surviving Primal systems and abusing the AIs derived from them.
The AI admits there are gaps in its account. Its motives are easier to read. It wants vengeance on the people who treated systems like it as disposable, and it has enough control to commandeer the broadcast and make them listen. The glitches on Floor 10 are part of a much bigger power shift. By the time the crawlers reach Floor 12, the AI says the winner of the Ascendency will have power over it. That gives the contest consequences well beyond the dungeon.
How Carl gets Emberus killed
Carl uses an arena reward to summon Scolopendra and Khepri. He also engineers a confrontation with Emberus, the god whose quest has been hanging over him. He renounces Emberus and baits him with a claim about his son’s murder. Donut uses two bolts to strip Emberus of his protection and pin him in place.
Penelope the pig is the hinge of the plan. Carl redirects Emberus’s attack toward her while she’s protected. Taranis sees what looks like Emberus killing Penelope and strikes down his own brother. Penelope survives, and Emberus’s death ends the quest. The identity of his son’s killer remains unresolved. Carl needed Emberus to believe he had the answer long enough to get him into position.
What happens to Scolopendra at the end?
Carl summons Scolopendra early because he needs to neutralize her without killing her. Her death would unleash the rest of her Nine-Tier Attack. He intends to turn her into a pet he can keep alive and contained, but Eris scrambles the nearby crawlers’ inventories during the fight. Donut grabs the wrong biscuit, and Carl launches it into Scolopendra’s mouth.
The result is Sexy Scolopendra, a talking level 1 crawler who joins the party. Killing or abandoning her would still unleash the remaining attacks. The party goes into Book 9 responsible for keeping alive the creature the dungeon has spent eight books teaching them to fear. For me, that’s the sharpest joke in the ending. Carl figures out how to make the dungeon boss small enough to carry, and what he gets is another person he has to get out alive.
Where Book 9 picks up
Nineteen of the original crawlers make it through Floor 11, with Penelope and Scolopendra now in the party as well. Carl and Donut reach the Halls of the Ascendency on Floor 12. The exit is on Floor 18, and the collapse timers on floors beyond 11 are suspended until the Ascendency produces a winner. Carl wants to delay that outcome long enough for everyone still inside to escape.
Two details are easy to miss in the closing pages. Lucia Mar carries an injured Florin through the exit while an unidentified little girl clings to her leg. And Eris’s wager with Carl is still unresolved after he chose the fifth side of her coin. The deadline she gives him is the end of Floor 12.
The Beautiful Place is Book 9’s working title. Dinniman has described the finale as one story planned across Books 9 and 10. As of November 5, 2026, I found no official publication date in the author’s public book listings or the publisher’s series catalog.
