Rick Riordan’s world of modern mythology may be getting much bigger on Disney+. A live-action television adaptation of The Kane Chronicles, Riordan’s bestselling fantasy trilogy inspired by Egyptian mythology, is officially in development at the streaming service.
According to Variety, Riordan is developing the adaptation with writer, director, and producer Angela Robinson. The project is being produced through 20th Television, the studio behind Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.
The announcement is exciting news for readers who have waited years to see Carter and Sadie Kane on-screen. However, there is an important distinction: The Kane Chronicles is currently in development, which is not the same as receiving an official series order.
Disney+ has not announced a release date, cast, filming schedule, episode count, or production start date.
What We Know About The Kane Chronicles Disney+ Series
Riordan and Robinson are attached to write and executive produce the proposed live-action series. Rebecca Riordan will also serve as an executive producer alongside Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Jeremy Bell of the Gotham Group, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter and TheWrap.
Robinson brings considerable television experience to the project. Her credits include work on True Blood, The L Word, How to Get Away With Murder, and Wednesday. Her involvement gives the developing adaptation an experienced creative partner who has worked across fantasy, mystery, and character-driven drama.
Riordan’s direct participation may be the most encouraging detail for longtime readers. The author has been closely involved with Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians, working with the show’s creative team and serving as an executive producer alongside Rebecca Riordan.
That does not guarantee that every part of The Kane Chronicles will reach the screen unchanged. Television adaptations inevitably make structural and visual changes. Still, having Riordan involved in the writing and development process gives the series a direct connection to the person who created Carter, Sadie, and their world.
What Is The Kane Chronicles About?
The Kane Chronicles follows Carter and Sadie Kane, siblings who have lived largely separate lives since the death of their mother.
Carter travels around the world with their father, Egyptologist Dr. Julius Kane, while Sadie lives with their grandparents in London. When Julius brings the siblings together for an experiment at the British Museum, he accidentally unleashes Set, the Egyptian god of chaos, and then disappears.
Carter and Sadie soon discover that the Egyptian gods are returning to the modern world. They also learn that their family is connected to an ancient order of magicians and that they possess inherited abilities they do not yet understand.
The siblings must overcome their differences, master Egyptian magic, find their father, and prevent a conflict among the gods from throwing the world into chaos.

Riordan’s official series page describes an increasingly dangerous conflict involving the House of Life, the sun god Ra, and Apophis, the enormous serpent associated with chaos.
The trilogy contains many of the elements that made Percy Jackson popular, including young heroes, sarcastic humor, dangerous quests, family conflicts, and ancient gods operating in the present day. But Egyptian mythology gives the series a distinct identity rather than making it feel like another version of Percy’s story.
Is the Disney+ Series Connected to Percy Jackson?
The Kane Chronicles takes place in the same larger fictional universe as the Percy Jackson books, although Carter and Sadie’s trilogy tells its own story.
Riordan later brought the characters together in Demigods & Magicians, a collection of crossover stories featuring Carter and Sadie alongside Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase. The crossovers confirm that Greek demigods and Egyptian magicians inhabit the same world.
That connection could eventually give Disney+ an opportunity to build a larger shared universe around Riordan’s books. However, no crossover between The Kane Chronicles and Percy Jackson and the Olympians has been announced.
For now, readers should view this as a separate adaptation centered on the Kane siblings and Egyptian mythology. Carter and Sadie do not need Percy Jackson to carry their story, and the original trilogy offers enough characters, villains, and magical history to support a complete television series of its own.
What Happened to Netflix’s Kane Chronicles Movies?
This is not the first attempt to adapt The Kane Chronicles.
Netflix previously planned to turn the trilogy into a series of live-action movies, beginning with The Red Pyramid. Rick and Rebecca Riordan were involved as producers, and a screenplay entered development. However, the proposed movies never moved into production.
In 2024, Riordan revealed that the rights had reverted to him after the property spent several years in development at Netflix. In an update on his official website, he explained that he and Rebecca Riordan were considering other possibilities but wanted to wait for the right deal.
Disney+ now appears to be that next opportunity.
Moving from a proposed movie trilogy to a television series could ultimately benefit the story. The Red Pyramidintroduces an extensive magical system, numerous Egyptian gods, the House of Life, and a complicated family history. A season of television may provide more room to establish that world than a single feature-length movie.
That is only a possibility at this stage, though. Disney+ has not revealed how the books would be divided or whether each novel would receive its own season.
Has Disney+ Ordered The Kane Chronicles to Series?
Not yet.
The phrase “in development” means writers and producers are working on the project, but it does not guarantee that filming will begin. Disney+ could commission scripts, request revisions, order a pilot, approve a complete season, or decide not to move forward.
Riordan himself has previously reminded readers that many projects enter development without ultimately being produced. Fans should therefore be excited about the announcement while keeping expectations realistic.
A formal series order would be the next major update to watch for. After that, Disney+ could begin announcing casting, directors, episode details, and a production schedule.
Does The Kane Chronicles Have a Release Date?

Who Could Play Carter and Sadie Kane?
No actors have been cast as Carter or Sadie Kane.

That family dynamic is meaningful to their characterization and should remain an important part of the television series.

Why This Is Big News for Rick Riordan Fans
The Kane Chronicles has long been overshadowed by the enormous popularity of Percy Jackson, but it contains some of Riordan’s most imaginative world-building.
The magical paths connected to Egyptian gods, the conflict between order and chaos, and the alternating perspectives of Carter and Sadie make the trilogy especially well suited to a serialized adaptation. The books can deliver large fantasy set pieces while maintaining an emotional story about two siblings rebuilding their relationship.
A successful adaptation would also introduce a new audience to Egyptian mythology and some of Riordan’s best characters, including Bast, Zia Rashid, Walt Stone, Anubis, Set, and Apophis.
Most importantly, the Disney+ project gives The Kane Chronicles another genuine chance to reach the screen after the Netflix movies stalled. There is still a long road between development and release, but this is the most significant adaptation update the trilogy has received in years.
For now, fans can revisit The Red Pyramid, The Throne of Fire, and The Serpent’s Shadow while waiting to see whether Disney+ officially opens the doors to Brooklyn House.
