Ace will release a deluxe hardcover of Matt Dinniman’s first Dungeon Crawler Carl novel on November 17, 2026, with a $65 U.S. list price. The collector’s edition features new artwork by Victo Ngai, a solvable maze printed on the hardcover beneath the dust jacket, and a Q&A in which Princess Donut interviews Dinniman. At $35 more than the standard Ace hardcover, the price difference comes down to the book’s design and that Donut-hosted interview.
If you’re buying it for “Backstage at the Pineapple Cabaret,” check your shelf first. Ace’s 2024 hardcover already includes part one of that bonus story.

What comes with the Dungeon Crawler Carl deluxe hardcover?
The feature I’d look for first is the maze. It’s printed on the illustrated hardcover itself, so you have to take off the dust jacket to find it. The reverse of the jacket has its own illustrations, and the endpapers inside the covers are decorated. Ace also lists stenciled page edges and a full-color ribbon bookmark showing Carl and Donut on the run.
The Q&A is the standout extra for anyone who already owns a copy. Princess Donut spends much of the book making sure she has an audience, so giving her the interviewer’s chair feels like a fitting use of the bonus pages. The maze works for a similar reason. A book about surviving a dungeon gives the reader a small puzzle to solve before they’ve even opened it.
Deluxe hardcover vs. standard hardcover and paperback
| U.S. Ace edition | U.S. list price | Pages | ISBN-13 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deluxe hardcover, November 17, 2026 | $65 | 464 | 9798217192199 |
| Standard hardcover, August 27, 2024 | $30 | 464 | 9780593820247 |
| Trade paperback, December 30, 2025 | $20 | 480 | 9780593820254 |
The two hardcovers have the same listed page count. The paperback runs 16 pages longer, but page count alone can’t tell you which edition has more bonus material. Ace identifies Donut’s Q&A as a feature of the deluxe edition and lists the first installment of “Backstage at the Pineapple Cabaret” for both hardcovers.
Is the deluxe hardcover worth $65?
If you already own the standard hardcover, I’d upgrade only if you want Ngai’s artwork, the maze, or the Donut Q&A enough to buy a second copy. If the bonus story is what caught your attention, the standard hardcover has part one.
If you’re buying for a fan, the deluxe hardcover makes more sense. The maze is a feature they can actually try, and the Q&A gives them something to flip to even if they know Carl and Donut’s first adventure by heart. Use ISBN 9798217192199 to confirm you’ve found the right edition before ordering. Check the deluxe hardcover preorder on Amazon
If you’re trying the series for the first time, I’d start with the $20 paperback and put the $45 difference toward the sequels if you get hooked. The deluxe hardcover also works as a starting point because it contains Book 1, where Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, enter an alien dungeon broadcast as entertainment.
Our spoiler-light review of Dungeon Crawler Carl explains why the humor works, and our Dungeon Crawler Carl reading order shows where to go after Book 1. For more releases this month, see the November 2026 fantasy and science-fiction guide.
