Can You Start With The First War?
Start with The First Step. You can grasp book three’s setup immediately: a young man wants to protect his village and his teachers have ordered him to stay out of the fight. The first two books give that order its weight. You see what Wu Ying had to learn, why belonging to the sect matters, and how much he stands to lose if he defies it.

What Is The First War About?
As winter ends, the rival states of Wei and Shen move closer to war. Wu Ying’s home village lies in the path of the armies. His family and friends are in danger, but the Verdant Green Waters sect has barred him from taking part in the conflict. He has to decide what he owes the people who raised him and the people who gave him a way to pursue immortality.
The opening chapter starts with Wu Ying sitting in a courtyard, controlling his breathing and working chi through his body. That scene gives a better sense of the book’s appeal than the title alone. Even with armies gathering, Wong makes room for the physical work behind Wu Ying’s abilities. The question the premise raises is what all that discipline is worth if Wu Ying can’t use it to help the people he cares about.
Who Should Read The First War?
- Readers who enjoy the training in progression fantasy. If you like seeing what a technique takes to learn and how practice changes a character’s options, sample the first chapter. It puts you inside the work of cultivation before asking what Wu Ying will do with it.
- Epic fantasy readers who care about the people in the path of a war. The rivalry between Wei and Shen matters here because Wu Ying can put names and faces to the people who might pay for it. That makes his village a stronger hook than the prospect of two armies meeting.
- LitRPG readers curious about cultivation fantasy. If you like tracking how Carl gains abilities in Dungeon Crawler Carl, try The First Step for a different kind of progression. Wong builds Wu Ying’s growth around chi, martial training and the pursuit of immortality. The opening excerpt is a quick way to see whether that approach appeals to you. Our Dungeon Crawler Carl review
If you’re shopping for a standalone military fantasy, the title can point you in the wrong direction. The reason to pick up The First War is to see what happens when Wu Ying’s training and his loyalty to home finally demand different things of him.
