In Melissa Caruso’s The Last Soul Among Wolves, Kembral Thorne goes to an island mansion to help an old friend and finds four of her childhood friends trapped in a contest where the last heir alive gets a wish. Before The Last Star in the Void, remember how that wish works, why Kem’s blood draws attention in the Echoes, and how much closer she and Rika Nonesuch have become since their days as rivals.
Spoiler warning: This recap discusses the first two Echo Archives books and uses Orbit’s announced premise for the third.

How Lovegrace’s will turns eight heirs into targets
Kem is still on maternity leave when her best friend Jaycel asks her to come to the reading of Lady Lovegrace’s will. The mansion sits on an island reached by a sandbar at low tide. Inside, Kem finds a reunion she never planned on and a surprise guest in Rika, her girlfriend and a professional thief who’s there on a job of her own.
Four of the eight potential heirs are Kem’s old friends. They became entangled with the relics after Kem left their group to become a Hound. The names in the book were written in blood, and Lovegrace’s death sets the contest in motion. Each death brings the remaining heirs closer to the wish. Some of the people in the book got involved as kids. Others understood what they stood to gain.
That difference matters once people start dying. The curse is already killing off heirs, and someone is willing to hurry it along. Every death can help a rival claimant, even if the person who stands to gain had nothing to do with it.
What the mirror, book and lantern have to do with the wolf
The three relics are a mirror, a book and a lantern. The book records the claimants, while the lantern is tied to the collection of their souls. A giant wolf carries the lantern when it comes to harvest a soul. Between attacks, the lantern is hidden deeper in the Echoes, so getting hold of it means figuring out where to intercept it.
That’s where the island mystery changes shape. Kem can question the people in the house about the names in the book, but stopping the next death takes her back into the layered realities she and Rika navigated in The Last Hour Between Worlds. The farther down they go, the less they can count on familiar rules. The case turns on learning how the relics work inside those worlds quickly enough to intervene.
Why Kem’s blood matters before book three
Remember the year-turning party in book one. A mysterious clock sent the party down through successive Echoes, and Kem came out of that ordeal having named the Crux year. By the time she goes looking for the lantern in book two, her blood can draw attention from beings across the Echoes. Going deeper to save her friends comes with a risk that follows her from the first book into the second.
Orbit’s description of The Last Star in the Void gives that blood a new role. Tears are spreading through the Echoes, and Kem’s blood is the only thing that can close them. At the same time, a mysterious Echo asks her to investigate her own murder, and someone among her allies wants to stop her. In book two, Kem had to work out how to keep someone else from becoming the next victim. In book three, she has to apply that same instinct to herself.
Where Kem and Rika stand going into the finale
Kem and Rika are already dating when they meet at the mansion. The tricky part is that they still have professional loyalties and old secrets. Kem’s reunion brings her life before the Hounds back into view, and the case exposes parts of Rika’s past she’d rather keep private. Kem’s daughter Emmi gives those choices a weight they never had when Kem and Rika were simply rivals.
When book three opens, Kem is back at work, Emmi is learning to crawl, and Kem is thinking about a more serious future with Rika. Orbit says Rika will have to decide how much of her humanity she’s willing to sacrifice to protect Kem. That’s the thread worth remembering from the mansion case. They already know how to get each other out of danger. The harder question is what each of them is willing to risk for a life together after the danger passes.
