The 2026 National Book Award finalists have been announced, narrowing September’s 50-book longlists to 25 titles across Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Translated Literature and Young People’s Literature.
Edwidge Danticat, Valeria Luiselli, Victoria Chang and Karl Ove Knausgaard are among the writers advancing to the final round. Each category has five finalists, with one winner to be announced on Wednesday, November 18, 2026.
Have the 2026 National Book Award finalists been announced?
Yes. The finalists were announced on October 6. All five category lists are now available, and the Fiction and Nonfiction longlists are also complete.
The tables below place the five finalists first in each category. “Longlist only” identifies a book recognized in September that did not advance. Neither label means a book has won.

What changed from the longlists?
The field has been cut in half: five books in each category have advanced, and five remain longlist honorees. That distinction matters when choosing a book from an awards display or reading a recommendation described as a “2026 nominee.”
For example, Marlon James’s The Disappearers and Louise Erdrich’s Python’s Kiss were longlisted for Fiction but are not among the five finalists. In Poetry, Victoria Chang and Fady Joudah advanced, while Layli Long Soldier did not.
The Translated Literature finalists include work by Knausgaard, Vicente Luis Mora, Intan Paramaditha, Mohamed Mbougar Sarr and Samar Yazbek. Both writers and translators receive recognition in this category, which is why the translation credits remain in the table.
How to use the finalists as a reading list
Start with the category you most enjoy, then choose one title rather than trying to read every finalist before the ceremony. Fiction offers five places to begin; Nonfiction provides a separate route for readers who prefer memoir, cultural criticism or reported work.
Following the awards before the result is announced lets you form your own response to a book. A finalist designation can help you discover an unfamiliar writer, but it cannot predict whether that book will become your personal favorite.
The longlisted books remain useful reading suggestions too. Advancing to the final round is one panel’s decision, and a title that stopped at the longlist may still be the right choice for your interests.
When will the 2026 National Book Award winners be announced?
The five winners will be announced on November 18, 2026, at the 77th National Book Awards Ceremony & Benefit Dinner. As of October 18, no winner has been named in any of the five competitive categories.
Who is hosting the 2026 National Book Awards?
The National Book Foundation announced on October 15 that Kyle MacLachlan will host the November 18 ceremony. Michelle Zauner, author of Crying in H Mart and lead singer of Japanese Breakfast, will perform as the musical guest.
How to watch the 2026 National Book Awards ceremony
The ceremony will be livestreamed free from Cipriani Wall Street in New York on Wednesday, November 18, 2026, at 8 p.m. EST (5 p.m. PST). Readers can visit the Foundation’s official awards page and select “Register to Watch.” The broadcast will be available on the Foundation’s website and YouTube, with Jo Firestone hosting the YouTube Live chat.
Winners will be revealed during the ceremony in all five competitive categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Translated Literature and Young People’s Literature.

How are the books selected?
The Foundation appointed 25 judges for the 2026 Awards, with five judges assigned to each category. Each panel selects a 10-book longlist, five finalists and one eventual winner. Decisions are made independently of the Foundation’s staff and board.
The official eligibility guidelines require books to be published by a U.S. publisher within the December 1, 2025–November 30, 2026 eligibility period. Additional rules apply by category.
Each winner receives $10,000, and each finalist receives $1,000. For Translated Literature, prize money is divided equally between the author and translator; for co-authored books, it is divided equally between authors.
