Hyperion Summary
Seven pilgrims are on a voyage to Hyperion and share their stories of how they ended up flying towards Hyperion. On Hyperion, there is a creature called the Shrike that strikes fear in the hearts of many as well as being worshipped by others. Also, on Hyperion exists the Valley of the Time Tombs, structures that are traveling back in time.
Their pilgrimage coincides with the galaxy at war and Hyperion being in the middle of it all. All seven pilgrims are heading to Hyperion to seek answers as they fly to the one place the Hegemony of Man’s Law do not apply. With war looming above their heads, the pilgrims place their hopes in this last voyage to Hyperion to seek the answers that have eluded them with the threat of the Shrike hanging above their heads.

Commentary
Dan Simmons is an amazing author and his writing ability shines in this epic sci-fi novel. Not many writers could have pulled off writing a novel like this and the attention to each character’s story makes this a great read. Each of the pilgram’s story can be a book in itself and yet, Simmons is able to combine all their stories and not ruin the overall plot of Hyperion.
The novel won the 1990 Hugo Award for Best Novel as well as the 1990 Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. And after reading this novel, it is hard to see any other novel winning the award. Simmons gives it all when writing and whenever I read any novel by him, I am always amazed at how well thought out the novels are.
Conclusion
After reading Hyperion, I know I’ll help to read the rest of this series and see where the story goes from here. Knowing Simmons, I know I’ll be in for a treat. If you love sci-fi novels, then Hyperion is a must read. Without even debating about it, I gave this novel five stars and easily have this as one of the best sci-fi novels that I have ever read.
