The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Any list of sci-fi books should always start with The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. His novels are funny and will show you a side of sci-fi novels that you didn’t know existed. He isn’t the first author to combine sci-fi and humor but he has helped the genre become more popular with his novels over the decades.
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Another novel that I read early when I was just beginning to read sci-fi books was Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. It is a classic sci-fi novel and is on many lists so I gave it a go. This was a great decision because it is a wonderful but weird novel that showcases everything I love about the genre even when it gets weird at times. Dick is a must read if you love sci-fi novels and you can’t go wrong with this one!
Dune
What happens when fantasy and sci-fi novels come together? You get a classic like Dune. And yes, I know that this formula doesn’t always work but talented authors can make this an adventure unlike any other. Dune is an incredible and fun read and has all the common elements of fantasy novels that I love. There is a lot of information and Frank Herbert does a good job of not overwhelming the reader.
Strangers in a Strange Land
As I continiued to dive deeper into the world of sci-fi novels, I came acorss the novel Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein. What jumps out at me about this novel is how much it feels like a 1990s movie. Heinlein tells a wonderful and weird story that tackles many themes and it is impossible to put the novel down. Sci-fi novels are not your typical stories but under the tutelage of the right author, they turn into a memorable story.
Station Eleven

The novels mentioned before have been out for many decades and you might think that sci-fi may have peaked and you would be wrong. There are tons of amazing new sci-fi novels and one of my all time favotrites is Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. This novel imagines a dark post-apocalyptic world and tells the story of a nomadic group of actors and musicians that gets caught in something terrifying.
Hyperion

An author that I always enjoy reading is Dan Simmons because his stories are always entertaining and his writing style makes these novels come to life. Hyperion by Dan Simmons might be my favorite sci-fi novel of all time and I love how Simmons tells the story and makes it all come together. Few authors can pull this off and Simmons exceeds any ceiling, writing a novel that will be remembered for centuries as a result.

Amazing list. The first sci fi novel I read was Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir.
“When Worlds Collide” and the successor “After Worlds Collide” is a good read, that not many people know! 🙂
Hopefully they take your advice!
