Today, we will reviewing the popular romance fantasy novel Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. This novel has taken the book world by storm and has topped the bestseller charts out of nowhere! Find out if the novel is all hype and/or one of the best books of 2023!
Fourth Wing Summary
20-year-old Violet Sorrengail is forced to enter the Rider Quadrant by her mother who is a general and the commander of the college. Violet always dreamed of being a scribe, people who document the history of their country Navarre. But now, Violet has to put her life on the line in the war college.
Both of Violet’s older siblings graduated from the Rider Quadrant and became legends. But Violet is not like them. She is small and fragile and hasn’t received training to become a fighter. And her last name means that she has a target on her back as well as being the weak link.
But Violet will do anything to survive the dangerous tests as well as bond with a dragon. To do that, she needs to outwit her opponents and prove to everyone that she is capable of becoming a warrior no matter the risk.
The Future of the Fantasy Genre
The romance and fantasy genre, also known as romantasy, has become popular over the past decade. And the success of Fourth Wing has showcased where the fantasy genre is headed. Yarros and Sarah J. Maas have become the faces and their book sales have reflected that.
And a big reason is that the novels are really good. I finished this book in less than two days, unable to put it down. Yarros is a gifted storyteller and always leaves you on a cliffhanger. The world of Navarre is unique and while the setting is mostly at the battle college, we learn a lot about the history of Navarre and the dragons that also live there.
The best two comparisons I have for this novel are The Hunger Games and Harry Potter but when they were older. The main difference is that Yarros’s novel has a lot more romance and sex. The romance and fantasy elements are well balanced and very well written. It is no surprise that this novel has taken off and has a huge fanbase.
Fourth Wing Tops the Charts
It should come as no surprise to anyone that Fourth Wing topped the New York Times Bestseller List. And the reasoon for that is Tik Tok. The BookTok community shared this novel and everyone seemed to agree that this was an amazing book. Yarros keep the plot moving at all times, never leaving a dull moment for readers, and unfortunately, for Violet.
The success of Fourth Wing led to the second novel in the series,Iron Flame, releasing early. The novel released 7 months after Fourth Wing and broke the record for the fasting selling fantasy novel of all time. It also sold half a million copies in its first week. Yarros was at a Barnes & Noble in New York City, celebrating the release of Fourth Wing at midnight with fans.
The Empyrean Series
Fourth Wing is the first book in the Empyrean series. Yarros plans to release five books in the series and has released two so far. The third Empyrean novel doesn’t have an official release date as of yet. But fans can expect it to be released either late 2024 or early 2025 as Yarros has said that she has a release date in mind.
Conclusion
The future is bright for Yarros and the Empyrean series. If you are a fan of romance and enjoy fantasy or love dragons, then you will love this novel. The characters are fun and you will love the plot twists. Even when some of them are obvious, you will be too invested to care that you it coming, and enjoying every second of it like I did.

I struggled to read this book. I think this is one of those stories I may appreciate once it’s adapted to streaming or a movie. It had some decent world building.
