The Rolling Thunder Book Bus has given out over 200,000. books to Children in Oklahoma City since the program was formed over a dozen years ago.
Over 200,000 Books for Children in Oklahoma City
In the Oklahoma City Public School system, there are 32,000 children, meaning each child would account for six books on average. The school system has over 800,000 books in circulation. That means that about one out of four books in circulation are from The Rolling Thunder Book Bus.
“It’s a great experience,” said Oklahoma City Thunder NBA Player Jeremiah Robinson-Earl about giving out books to children in Oklahoma City. “It’s always a good opportunity to be in the community and just giving back to everybody.”
“It shows that we care a lot about this community because they show a lot of support to us. We just like to take care of each other. It’s a tight-knit community.”
Children Flock to Events for Free Books
The Oklahoma City Thunder hold many community events and these have been a huge success. Lots of children show up for free books as well as getting the chance to meet their favorite NBA players.
“It’s such a huge number. It’s hard to get your head around,” said Sean McDaniel, Superintendent of Oklahoma City Public Schools about the number of books provided by the program.”
“We need our kids to read and many of them, they don’t have books at home. They rely on the school district and they rely on partners like the Thunder. This is something worth celebrating because it’s that important to the life and to the trajectory for a young person. You figure out how to read, we help you and it opens all kinds of opportunities for kids as they move through the system.”
Even More Books to Give Out
The Rolling Thunder Book Bus program will be continuing its book program as well as expanding the region that they provide books for. They plan to keep expanding and visiting different parts of Oklahoma and providing even more children with books all across the state.
