Sally Rooney’s U.K. publisher, Faber, has announced that it will stop supplying her books in the United Kingdom in every format. The October 14 decision follows the Irish novelist’s pledge to support Palestine Action using royalties from her work.

The immediate problem concerns paying the author. In its official statement, Faber said current U.K. legislation prevents it from passing on Rooney’s U.K. earnings. The publisher reached its decision with her agreement.

For readers, the announcement raises several questions: which books are affected, whether existing copies can still be sold, and whether this amounts to a ban on her novels.

Why Has Faber Stopped Supplying Sally Rooney’s Books?

Palestine Action was proscribed as a terrorist organization in the United Kingdom in July 2025. Rooney subsequently pledged financial support through her royalties.

As Publishers Weekly reports, the designation makes providing financial or other material support to the group illegal under U.K. law. Rooney’s stated intentions have consequently created legal risks around fulfilling her publishing contracts.

Faber described selling an author’s work while being unable to pay them as an “unconscionable situation.” It has therefore stopped supplying Rooney’s work to the U.K. market.

This is a specific dispute involving the legal status of Palestine Action and the intended use of royalties. Describing it simply as a response to Rooney’s support for Palestinians would leave out the central reason given for the decision.

What Has Sally Rooney Said?

Rooney has agreed to the withdrawal.

In a statement reported by the publishing trade press, she said fulfilling contracts for U.K. publication could constitute a serious criminal offense. She also said she had been open about her beliefs and intentions and was prepared to accept the consequences.

Her position makes this an unusual publishing story: the author and publisher have agreed to stop supplying a commercially successful body of work because of the legal implications surrounding its earnings.

Which Sally Rooney Books Are Affected?

Faber’s announcement covers her work in every format in the United Kingdom. Her publisher’s catalog includes these four novels:

The statement extends beyond an individual title or edition. It also does not announce a worldwide withdrawal: Faber says it will continue selling her work in other territories.

Are Sally Rooney’s Books Banned in the U.K.?

The announced measure is a publisher’s decision to stop supplying the books because of the legal risks around royalty payments. It should not be described as a government order banning people from reading or possessing Rooney’s novels.

There is also a difference between stopping new supply and removing every existing copy from sale. The Guardian reported that Waterstones could continue selling existing stock.

That distinction explains why readers may still encounter copies in bookshops despite headlines announcing the end of U.K. sales.

Has Faber Dropped Sally Rooney?

Faber has said it remains proud to publish Rooney and will continue selling her work elsewhere. Its statement concerns U.K. supply rather than the termination of its entire relationship with the author.

For Books of Brilliance readers, the key issue to watch is whether the legal circumstances change enough for distribution to resume. Faber’s October 14 announcement does not provide a restart date.

Until another statement is issued, the clearest description is that Faber has halted U.K. supply with Rooney’s agreement, while continuing to publish her work for other markets.
