What Is How Does It End? About?
Morgan, a former influencer, and Theo, an aspiring screenwriter, meet at a New York party and fall in love. Their relationship ends before an infectious catastrophe traps Morgan inside a barricaded Manhattan.
According to Pan Macmillan’s synopsis, Morgan sets out to rescue her mother while Theo tries to keep an escape route available. Along the way, Morgan begins livestreaming her ordeal.
Her journey also takes her through places tied to their relationship. Survival means crossing a dangerous city while revisiting the memories she carries through it.
Is It Romance, Science Fiction, or Horror?
The publishers emphasize a blend of speculative disaster and emotional storytelling. Pan Macmillan presents it as Gong’s first adult contemporary novel and compares its premise to The Last of Us paired with a love story.
That description suggests an infection-driven survival story with romance at its center. It does not establish whether Morgan and Theo receive a happy ending.
Penguin Random House confirms a dual-timeline structure. The relationship’s beginnings and the apocalypse therefore form two connected strands of the novel.
Why Is This a Significant Release for Chloe Gong?
The announcement also marks a publishing milestone. In its October 14 acquisition report, Publishers Weekly identifies How Does It End? as Gong’s first book with Penguin Random House, following her work with several Simon & Schuster imprints.
The report names Wendy Wong as editor and says Jesse Shuman acquired world English rights through agent Laura Crockett at TriadaUS.
Why the Premise Caught My Attention
What interests me most is the use of Manhattan as a map of a broken relationship. A familiar street can hold an entirely different meaning after a breakup; adding an outbreak gives those emotional landmarks an immediate physical danger.
The livestreaming element also raises an intriguing question: how does someone accustomed to being watched respond when visibility becomes part of surviving? Those are possibilities suggested by the premise, rather than judgments about the finished book.
