Rebecca Yarros is bringing the dragons, danger and romance of Fourth Wing to a completely new format.
The bestselling author has officially revealed Fourth Wing, The Graphic Novel: Volume One, a full-color adaptation of the first half of her blockbuster fantasy novel. The graphic novel will allow readers to experience Violet Sorrengail’s arrival at Basgiath War College through detailed illustrations while remaining faithful to the original story.
The first volume will be released on April 6, 2027, with several collectible editions available. Here is everything Fourth Wing fans need to know about the graphic novel, including its story, artist, release date and how much of the original book it will cover.

Fourth Wing, The Graphic Novel: Volume One will be released on April 6, 2027.
The release date is confirmed on Rebecca Yarros’ official website, and preorders are now available through major booksellers.
The graphic novel will be published by Ten Speed Graphic as part of a collaboration involving Entangled Publishing and Piatkus.

What Is the Fourth Wing Graphic Novel About?
The graphic novel retells the beginning of Violet Sorrengail’s journey at Basgiath War College.
Violet expected to spend her life in the Scribe Quadrant, surrounded by books and historical records. Those plans change when her mother, General Lilith Sorrengail, orders her to enter the Riders Quadrant and compete for the chance to bond with a dragon.
Violet is physically smaller than many of the other candidates, and her body is more vulnerable to injury. However, she quickly discovers that intelligence can be just as valuable as strength inside the deadly war college.
Surviving Basgiath also means dealing with ruthless rivals, dangerous training exercises and Xaden Riorson, the powerful wingleader who has plenty of reasons to hate Violet’s family.
As Violet fights to survive, she begins to question what Navarre’s leaders have told its citizens about the war taking place beyond the kingdom’s protective wards.
The graphic novel will follow the same central story as Fourth Wing. It is an adaptation rather than a sequel or a new installment in the Empyrean series.
How Much of Fourth Wing Will Volume One Cover?
Volume One will adapt chapters 1 through 22, covering approximately the first half of the original novel.
That means readers should not expect the entire story of Fourth Wing to appear in this single graphic novel. The remaining chapters will be adapted in Fourth Wing, The Graphic Novel: Volume Two.
A release date for Volume Two has not been announced, but the second graphic novel is officially planned.
Dividing the book into two volumes should give the creative team more room to preserve the character development, dragon-rider training, romance and major action sequences that made the original novel so popular.
Who Is Illustrating the Fourth Wing Graphic Novel?
Italian comic artist Anabel Rossi is illustrating the graphic novel.
Rossi is responsible for turning Violet, Xaden, Basgiath War College and the series’ dragons into a complete visual narrative. The book will feature lavish full-color artwork rather than occasional illustrations added to the prose novel.
Rebecca Yarros is adapting the book herself, giving fans reassurance that the graphic version will remain closely connected to her original vision.
The covers for the newly revealed editions were illustrated by artist Mayet, while Rossi created the interior artwork.
How Many Empyrean Graphic Novels Will There Be?
Publishers have announced six graphic novels adapting the first three books in the Empyrean series:
- Fourth Wing — two graphic volumes
- Iron Flame — two graphic volumes
- Onyx Storm — two graphic volumes
This plan means each prose novel will be divided into two graphic adaptations.
The six announced volumes only cover the first three Empyrean novels. Yarros has planned five main novels for the complete fantasy series, but graphic adaptations of the future fourth and fifth books have not yet been announced.
Ten Speed Graphic, Piatkus and Entangled Publishing originally announced the six-volume project in March 2025. At the time, the publishers said the adaptations would stay true to the books while adding a new visual dimension to the reading experience. Penguin Random House Comics confirmed that Yarros would personally adapt the series.
What Editions Will Be Available?
Fans will have several editions of Fourth Wing, The Graphic Novel: Volume One to choose from.
The main edition will be available as a hardcover, paperback and ebook. Retailer exclusives have also been announced for:

- Books-A-Million and Indigo
- Walmart
Target, Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million/Indigo will offer exclusive covers. Walmart’s edition will include an exclusive bookmark.
Yarros has emphasized that the story is identical in every edition. Readers can therefore choose their preferred cover or collectible feature without missing any chapters.
A deluxe edition will also be available through select retailers while supplies last. It includes an exclusive art print depicting Violet and Xaden’s first kiss. Copies sold in the United States and Canada will be hand-signed.
Because availability and pricing may differ by store and country, fans interested in the deluxe or retailer-exclusive versions should compare listings carefully before ordering.
Is the Graphic Novel a New Fourth Wing Story?
No. The graphic novel does not continue the story after Onyx Storm and should not be confused with Empyrean Book Four.
It is a visual retelling of the original Fourth Wing novel, beginning with Violet’s entrance into the Riders Quadrant.
However, the new artwork will give readers their first sustained visual interpretation of many important characters, locations and events. That could make it feel like a fresh experience even for fans who have already reread the novel several times.
Do You Need to Read Fourth Wing First?
Readers will not need to read the prose edition before starting the graphic novel.
The adaptation is being designed for both longtime Empyrean fans and newcomers. It will tell the story from the beginning and introduce Violet, Xaden, Basgiath and the dragon-rider world through sequential artwork.
Existing fans may get the most enjoyment from comparing the illustrations with the versions of the characters and dragons they imagined while reading. New readers, meanwhile, can use the graphic novel as their introduction to the series.
Because Volume One only adapts half of the first book, newcomers will need to wait for Volume Two or switch to the original novel to finish Violet’s first adventure.
Will the Graphic Novel Include the Romance and Mature Content?
The adaptation is expected to retain the action, romance and mature elements of the original story.
Fourth Wing includes violence, warfare, dangerous injuries, death, strong language and sexual content. Rebecca Yarros’ official book page carries a content warning for these elements, so readers should not assume the illustrated format makes the story appropriate for younger audiences.
Retail listings classify the graphic novel as an adult title.
Is This Connected to the Fourth Wing TV Series?
The graphic novel and the planned television adaptation are separate projects.
Amazon MGM Studios is developing an Empyrean television series for Prime Video with Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society. The graphic novels are being produced independently by the publishing team.
Both projects aim to bring the world of Fourth Wing into a visual medium, but the graphic novel is not a tie-in or adaptation of the television show.
Why the Fourth Wing Graphic Novel Is Exciting for Fans
The world of the Empyrean series is particularly well suited to a graphic adaptation. Basgiath’s deadly challenges, the Parapet, Threshing and the enormous dragons should all benefit from full-color visual storytelling.
The involvement of Rebecca Yarros is also encouraging. Instead of handing the story entirely to another writer, Yarros is adapting her own novel and helping determine how its major scenes translate to the page.
Volume One will not provide new answers to the mysteries left behind by Onyx Storm, but it offers fans another way to return to the beginning of Violet and Xaden’s story while waiting for future Empyrean releases.
With several collectible covers, a signed deluxe edition and six volumes already planned, the Fourth Wing graphic novel series could become one of the biggest fantasy publishing releases of 2027.
