Rebecca Yarros has another major publishing milestone to celebrate. Threshing Day, her companion collection set in the world of Fourth Wing, sold 857,802 print copies in its first week, giving it the biggest debut of 2026 so far.
Publishers Weekly reported the milestone on October 9, citing Circana BookScan figures. The launch also made the collection the third-bestselling print book of the year to date.
For Empyrean fans, the news offers a striking reminder of how much readers want to return to Basgiath—even when the new release is a collection of additional stories rather than the next main novel.
How Many Copies Did Threshing Day Sell?
The Publishers Weekly hardcover fiction chart places Threshing Day at No. 1, with 857,802 copies sold for the week ending October 3, 2026. The list appears in the publication’s October 12 issue.
That figure measures print sales tracked by Circana BookScan. It should not be presented as a worldwide total or a combined figure for print, ebooks and audiobooks.
The distinction also matters when describing the record. Threshing Day has the biggest debut of 2026 to date; the report does not establish a new all-time publishing record.
Its launch also reached the top of Apple Books. In the Associated Press’s October 6, 2026 Apple Books chart report, Threshing Day ranked No. 1 on the U.S. Top Paid Books list, while Threshing Day (Wing and Claw Collection) ranked No. 1 among paid audiobooks. These are Apple Books chart positions, not additional unit-sales figures, and should be kept separate from the Circana BookScan print total above.
It Is Already One of 2026’s Bestselling Books
According to PW’s October 9 report, only Allen Levi’s Theo of Golden and Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary had sold more print copies during 2026 at that point. Both had been available throughout the year.
A launch-week ranking and a year-to-date ranking measure different things. The first shows how strongly a book arrives; the second shows how much it has accumulated over the calendar year. Yarros’s collection made an immediate impression on both.
The final annual standings remain open. More releases and additional sales could change the order before December ends.
What Is Threshing Day About?
The official Threshing Day website describes thirteen stories centered on the day riders form their dragon bonds. The collection includes Xaden’s experience and revisits moments that helped shape characters within the Empyrean world.
Released September 29, 2026, the book expands the series through additional perspectives. Its appeal is easy to understand: readers who enjoy the relationships between riders and dragons have another opportunity to explore them.
For me, that is the most interesting part of this news. Fantasy worlds become particularly compelling when the supporting characters feel as though they have lives beyond the central plot. A companion collection offers space to explore those lives without requiring every story to move the main adventure forward.
Is Threshing Day Fourth Wing Book 4?
No. Threshing Day is a companion collection. The official description explicitly distinguishes it from the continuation of Violet and Xaden’s story after Onyx Storm.
Readers deciding where it belongs can use our guide to whether you need to read Threshing Day before Fourth Wing Book 4. The collection’s commercial success does not change its place alongside the main novels.
My recommendation is to approach additional stories because their premise interests you. A sales headline can bring a book to your attention, but your enjoyment of the characters and world should determine whether it belongs on your reading list.
Why This Sales Milestone Matters
The launch suggests substantial demand for stories beyond the main Empyrean installments. That is an interpretation of the sales figures, rather than a separate finding about why individual readers bought the book.
It is also a useful reminder that a fantasy series can offer several kinds of reading experiences. Some readers want the next major plot development. Others enjoy returning to familiar characters, examining earlier events or spending more time with the world’s mythology.
Threshing Day gives that second group something to consider. Its opening sales make the collection a significant book-industry story while leaving readers free to decide whether the companion format suits them.
