Seeing Fox and books in the same sentence and the word ban not mentioned is a sight to behold. But that is just what happened as Fox released a list of 18 must read classic books. See which books made their list!

Putting away our feeling for Fox aside, the list is interesting to say the least. I can imagine how the people who created the list must have tried to avoid listing any “banned book” for fear of backlash. That is why this list doesn’t feel like it has a backbone.

For example, a classic book that belongs on this list is The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. It is ironic seeing Fahrenheit 451 on the list considering it sums up book banning culture.

These are classic books that Fox recommends. And while I would like certain books to be included, it is a decent list. If any of Fox’s audience reads these books, that is a win in itself.

The only novel I don’t like on this list is The Scarlet Letter but I do like seeing these classics get the attention they deserve. You can see the full list below!

Classic fiction books

Classic nonfiction books

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby Novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Set in 1925 and told from Nick Carraway’s point of view, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is an American classic novel that captures the 1920s. The novel tells the story of Jay Gatsby, a millionaire with a mysterious past who wants to reunite with his former lover Daisy Buchanan.

Like many great novels, this one was inspired by true events based on a romance Fitzgerald has with a socialite as well as parties he attended in Long Island in 1922. The novel was considered a commercial failure, selling less than 20,000 copies and Gatsby considered himself a failure with nothing to be remembered for.

To Kill a Mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Like a lot of readers, I first read To Kill a Mockingbird in high school and couldn’t put the novel down even if I wanted to. The story is told by the viewpoint of Jean Louise Finch and tells the story of Atticus Finch defending Tom Robinson, a black man who has been accused of raping a white woman in Maycomb, Alabama.

Fahrenheit 451

A classic novel that is taught in schools and worth reading is Fahrenheit 451. It is a dystopian novel that imagines a world where books are outlawed and burned. Guy Montag is a fireman who burns books but ends up questioning the system in place and rebels. I personallu enjoyed this novel but it isn’t one that makes my top sci-fi novels list.

1984

A sci-fi novel that has risen to popularity in modern times is 1984 by George Orwell. When some ideas in this sci-fi and dystopian novel came true, people’s interest in the novel rose. The novel touches on issues such as mass surveillance, a controlling regime, and disinformation.

Conclusion
