It may feel like we traveled back to the late 1960’s as Dune is once again in the news. Frank Herbert’s epic fantasy and sci-fi series is releasing the second movie. Many moviegoers may be curious about the books which is why we will be discussing the proper reading order for the Dune series.
The movies have reminded many of the books that popularized sci-fi novels and paved the way for many sci-fi novels. Herbert’s Dune series was the first sci-fi book to top the New York Times bestseller list.
Dune Series by Frank Herbert
The novel and series are often compared to The Lord of the Rings which is ironic because J. R. R. Tolkien hated Dune. But he was nice enough to not bash Herbert’s book in public because he was a fellow author.

Dune went on to win the Hugo and Nebula awards and is considered the best selling sci-fi series of all time. And as it is back in the spotlight, we decided to list the series in the order that is was meant to be read in.
With that said, Dune is tricky because it has many short novels as well as many spinoffs. We will be looking only at the novels written by Herbert himself. His son Brian Herbert, along with Kevin J. Anderson, wrote two more books in the series that were based on notes left by Herbert. We won’t be including those novels. You can see the order below!
Dune Book Order
- Dune (1965)
- Dune Messiah (1969)
- Children of Dune (1976)
- God Emperor of Dune (1981)
- Heretics of Dune (1984)
Conclusion
If you want to dive into the world of Dune, then we recommend using this book order. And there are countless spinoffs if you want to learn even more about Dune’s history. Listing all of them would just confuse readers trying to get into this epic world. Happy reading!
