Every now and then, an epic standalone fantasy novel is released that takes the literary world by storm. And now we may get to see that book being adapted into a movie soon as Babel by R. F. Kuang’s movie option has been picked up.
Getting a movie option picked up doesn’t always guarantee a movie. But the success of Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators’ Revolution may be the reason why the novel gets adapted sooner than later.
Babel Movie Option Picked Up By Wiip
Wiip is the studio that ended up buying the rights for it for an undisclosed amount. They are the studio behind The Mare of Easttown and The Summer I Turned Pretty. Wiip was not alone as it bought the rights along with Temple Hill Entertainment, known for producing Twilight.

“We’ve been in love with Babel since we first tore through it—Rebecca [Kuang] is a singular, generational storyteller and we believe this is one of the most transporting, evocative and relevant fantasy novels since Harry Potter,” said wiip executives Paul Lee and Josh Stern.
Mentioning Harry Potter is interesting because the only thing these novels have in common is that they include magic and a magical institution. And in Babel, you need to study magic for years and understand the history behind it before you can use it. On top of all that, it is a novel about colonization and violence as the title suggests.
Babel Wins Multiple Awards
Babel was the recipient of numerous awards including the 2023 Nebula Award for Best Novel, the British Book Award for Best Fiction, and the Locus Award for Fantasy Novel. The novel was supposed to be up for the Hugo Award but it was ruled ineligible due to political reasons as China’s censorship laws forced the novel to be left off the list.
Kuang was excited about the announcement as one would expect. “I was so excited by Temple Hill and wiip’s vision for the project,” she said. “It felt like they were truly dedicated to creating a translation that adds to the story through the unique qualities of a different art form.”
