When browsing the web for news related to books, you come across the obvious book reviews and new books releasing. But there is often other news stuff that is weird, interesting or something that caught my eye. That is why we will be looking at book related news that caught my eye and what to make of it.

Book News of the Week

Florida School Asks Parents Permission to Let an African American author read to students

The first book related news that caught my eye was an article about a Florida school asking parents for permission to have an African American author read to students. I wouldn’t have believed this if it wasn’t in Florida. But teachers may lose their jobs and the school will see protests if they do anything that Florida parents don’t agree with. And they don’t agree with a lot of things.

This is something out of a fiction novel and must be degrading to the author. Teachers in Florida have been fired for a lot less so I can see why the school is taking precautions. But letting parents determine what authors and books their children can be exposed to is going to keep them ignorant of many things. When history itself is being censored, that is alarming in itself.

Massachusetts Library hides burner phones in books to help victims of domestic violence

There is also some good stuff related to books and libraries in the news this week. A Massachusetts library has books people can check out that have burner phones to help domestic victims. The phones come with “resources for safety planning, pro bono legal action, how to get a restraining order.”

The ingenuity of this is brilliant and I hope it helps those who need it the most. And while it is sad to see books being damaged, this is for a good cause. Every state should adopt this brilliant strategy.

Romantasy Books Take Over the Internet

With the recent success of Sarah J. Mass’ latest novel, the internet has decided to ride the hype train. Romantic fantasy novels, or romantasy novels, are soaring in popularity and online publishing companies are trying to milk it for all its worth. You may also have noticed all the articles about this romantasy.

Bloomsbury, the book publishing company that Mass is signed to, increased their estimates of how much money they would make this year. Mass’ novel House of Flame and Shadow became the third fastest selling fantasy and sci-fi novel in its first week. And all of her other novels also saw an uptick in sales.

They should give Mass stocks for the company because she is doing the heavy lifting. I am always happy when an author has success and wish Mass nothing but the best. Expect to see the romantasy genre overtake your news feeds and the book world.
