It is officially 2024 and one way to celebrate that is to read some books. That is why we made a list of 7 books that you should read to start the new year. Keep reading to find out which books made our list!
Start this year off strong by reading some of our favorite books. A few new books as well as classics that you may never have gotten around to reading. And instead of choosing the obvious picks, we decided to choose some that people may know but few have read them.
These are novels that we are still thinking about. Some of the books that stood out from last year include a novel from established authors such as James McBride and Justin Cronin. You can see the full list below!
Books That You Should Read in 2024
- The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett
- The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
- The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride
- The Ferryman: A Novel Hardcover by Justin Cronin
- Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
- The Wager by David Grann
- A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle
The Silent Patient

The Silent Patient might have one of the best plot twists of a thriller novel that I recently read. It is about a woman who doesn’t talk after murdering her husband. Psychotherapist Theo Faber transfers to the Grove to help Alicia Berenson talk again and find out what actually happened on the day of the murder.
The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store

One of the most popular books of 2023 was The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store. James McBride’s novel is about community and was selected as one of Barack Obama’s favorite books of the year. I do expect the novel to win a fee awards in the upcoming months.
The Ferryman

The Ferryman is an amazing read with so many layers. A lot takes place in this novel and I am surprised at how cohesive it all is. It is a trippy novel that is about a utopian that isn’t what everyone thinks it is. Without spoiling anything, I recommend this novel if you like fantasy novels and great writing.
Conclusion
These are 7 books that you should read to start the new year. There are a couple of newer novels as well as classics such as The Maltese Falcon and a Sherlock Holmes novel. How many of these novels have you read or plan to read? Let us know in the comments below!

4 and yesterday I added THE WAGER to my tbr stack. THE HEAVEN & EARTH GROCERY STORE was in my 2023 top 10. MALTESE FALCON and THE SILENT PATIENT were terrific reads.
When you need to use Barack Obama as a selling point for an author it makes one think the book can’t stand on its own merits. Better to keep politicians out of reviews.
Obama is an avid reader and his annual reading list is starting to get the attention as the Oprah or Bush-Hager or Witherspoon lists. There is nothing political about celebrities endorsing books especially those who can read, write or spell. These are not even books about politics or espousing a particular political ideology. The only political element in this is you and your personal agenda against Obama. Perhaps you can try to read more diverse books such as McBride’s to shed some of your biases.
As the author of this article, Ahaqir quoted Jean Rhys, “Reading makes immigrants of us all. It takes us away from home, but more important, it finds homes for us everywhere.”
Agree, I felt the same. Other book recommendations gave a bit of story information to peak readers interest. Also, I would be interested why the author feels it will win awards as the encouragement to select this book to read.

I’ve read all except Ferryman.
Your suggestions are great though I read some long ago. Many thanks
