Yukito Ayatsuji’s House Murders Books in Order: English Reading Guide

Start Yukito Ayatsuji’s House Murders books with The Decagon House Murders, then read The Mill House Murders, The Labyrinth House Murders and The Clock House Murders. These four novels are available in English. The Black Cat House Murders is announced for a UK English edition in February 2027.

The novels are also marketed as the Bizarre House Mysteries. Their appeal is the combination of unusual buildings, restricted groups of suspects and carefully arranged puzzles. This guide gives a practical route through the available English novels, rather than treating the translation list as the complete original Japanese bibliography.

Recommended English reading order

1. The Decagon House Murders

University mystery-club members visit an island associated with earlier unsolved killings. Their enthusiasm for detective fiction becomes a very different matter when the visitors themselves are in danger. A mainland investigation runs alongside the island story.

2. The Mill House Murders

A gathering at the isolated home of Fujinuma Kiichi is shadowed by death, a disappearance and a missing painting. Kiyoshi Shimada examines what happened, with the house itself becoming important to the problem.

3. The Labyrinth House Murders

A reclusive mystery writer invites younger crime authors to his home. The visit turns into a deadly contest, giving Ayatsuji another way to bring people who understand mystery conventions into a mystery they cannot simply walk away from.

The UK publisher’s listing dates its paperback to October 10, 2024; the US listing gives May 13, 2025. Those are edition-specific dates, not the date of the original Japanese novel.

4. The Clock House Murders

Ghosthunters investigate a remote mansion full of clocks and a rumor of haunting. A murder turns the visit into a trap. Expect another building-centered puzzle, rather than assuming the supernatural premise explains the crimes.

Its UK paperback appeared October 9, 2025, while the US paperback appeared June 2, 2026. It is already published in both markets.

What is coming next in English?

Pushkin Press lists The Black Cat House Murders for February 11, 2027 in the UK. Its premise involves a former estate manager’s notebook and a record of murder. This is an announced forthcoming edition, not a book already released in English as of this update.

The publisher also lists a manga adaptation of The Decagon House Murders. An adaptation is a separate format, so it does not add another prose novel to this reading order.

Do you have to follow the order?

The books present separate cases rather than parts of one cliffhanger. You can follow an individual mystery, but the sequence above gives a natural introduction to the author’s method and recurring connections. Avoid later-volume reviews that discuss solutions to earlier books.

If you enjoy Christie-style suspect lists, clues and unusual settings, begin with Decagon House. If you mainly want a fast thriller or a cozy atmosphere without violent death, adjust your expectations: these are deliberate murder puzzles.
