It has been 12 years since Martin released the 5th book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. Martin has gave updates on the book but the release date has been pushed back multiple times.
As a result, fans have constantly been asking him when he will complete the books and the series. The constant questions finally got to the fantasy author as he responded to a fan question at an event.
“So how many, how many uh… I been working. I’m 12 years late with Winds of Winter, as we know. I’m just going to put it right out there, you guys don’t have to pester me about it.”

If anyone knows how long it has been since the last book, it is definitely Martin. Besides working on the novel, the author is working on other books, TV shows and a bunch of other stuff.
We as fans are greedy and always want the next book in the series. But Martin is not the fastest writer and he doesn’t want to release a novel that isn’t perfect. HBO’s Game of Thrones showed us what happens when a project is rushed. The end result sucks and we would rather have waited for a better conclusion.
Martin has said that he is about 75 percent done with The Winds of Winter. That is great but fans don’t know how much they can trust Martin at this point with his constant delays.
We should just let Martin do his thing and not add to his stress. Because at the end of the day, the person that knows best how long it has been since the last novel is Martin himself.
