Records related to books caught my interest which is why I started looking around for the best ones. Some of them were impressive while others were tedious and required a lot of effort and little sleep. Keep reading to see a list of the records from authors, books, and individuals that made it into the Guinness World Record books!

Some of these records were intentional while others just happened because of the popularity of the author and their books. That is why some records can be broken on the list and others need a lot of luck and the right circumstances.

Most Books Sold in 24 Hours

The first record we will be looking at is the most books sold in a 24-hour span. That record goes to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It is the final book in the Harry Potter series and it sold 8.3 million copies in the first 24 hours. That is a ridiculous amount and it safe to say that this record won’t be broken for a long time.

Most Books Signed in a Single Session

Have you wondered what is the record for the most books signed in one session? If you have, then you will be happy to learn that the record is held by Vickrant Mahajan. He signed 6904 books in a single session in 2016 for his book Yes, Thank You Universe. Mahajan has set over a 100 records and that is his thing. Even so, signing that many books sounds like a miserable time.

The Highest Earning Author in a Single Year


Some authors are in high demand which leads them to making a lot of money is a single year. One author who makes a lot of money annually is James Patterson and he earned $95 million from June 2019-June 2020 to set the record for the highest earning author in a single year. He sold almost 5 million copies that year and $10 million of his earnings came from a multi-book advance.

The Most Abandoned Book

We have seen some impressive world records but not all records are good. The next record is for the most abandoned book at hotels in the United Kingdom and that record went to Simon Cowell: The Unauthorised Biography by Chas Newkey-Burden. This record was done in 2010 and is outdated but stuff like this aren’t really tracked.

The Record for the Longest Reading Marathon Aloud

This record is one that can be set by anyone if you are willing to torture yourself. The record for the longest reading marathon aloud is held by Rysbai Isakov from Turkey with 124 hours and 15 mins.  He set the record on September 22 to September 27 in 2022.
