It looks like there is going to be a movie adaption of George R.R. Martin’s short story, The Ice Dragon in the near future.
Martin announced the film during a promotional interview with Penguin Random House. He said that Warner Bros. Animation has purchased the rights to the story and the screen play will be written by David Anthony Durham.
The Ice Dragon Gets a Movie Adaption
The beat-selling author also mentioned that the story is “primarily a kid’s story” and Martin hopes that film is released to be watched in theaters. It will be interesting to see a Game of Thrones spinoff that is rated E for everyone considering Game of Thrones is known for its violence and murder.

“Some of you may know that I occasionally wrote other books that were not part of Westeros or that [story],” Martin said. “And one of them that I wrote way back in 1978 was a short story about a dragon, an ice dragon, and it’s called The Ice Dragon. Just a short story, as I said. It’s primarily a kid’s story, but we are going to make that [into a movie]. Warner Bros. Animation has purchased the rights to it, and we’re going to expand it to a fully animated film… a theatrical film, we hope, to be released in motion a motion picture palace near you, and David Anthony Durham will be writing the screenplay. And he better do a good job!”
Animated Game of Thrones
No timetable has been given for the movie but it looks like it may happen in the near future. Since it is an animation movie, a different department of Warner Bros. will be working on the movie and can focus on their work. Let’s hope that this animation movie is great so we can see more animated works centered around the Game of Thrones world.
Coincidently, an animated Game of Thrones spinoff The Golden Empire is in the works. It is rumored to be a tv show and will focus on the unseen lands of Yi Ti in Essos. They are inspired by Imperial China and it is known for its treasures and societal advancements.
Conclusion
What do you make of this announcement by Martin? This project can be something amazing if the animation and writing are done well. If this movie does well, we are most likely going to see even more animated Game of Thrones projects and even a children’s T.V. show!
