Actor Tom Hanks has announced his debut novel which is set to release next year. The book has been described as a “wildly ambitious” story about making a film.
The Making of Another Motion Picture Masterpiece
Titled, The Making of Another Motion Picture Masterpiece, the book is set to span 80 years. It is centered around the opening of a movie that is a “colossal, star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action film” and inspired by a comic book.
“Movie making is very hard work over a very long period of time that consists of so many moments of joy slapped up against an equal number of feelings of self-loathing,” Hanks said of the book. “It is the greatest job in the world and the most confounding of labors that I know of.”
“I hope the book captures as much of ‘the accidental judgements and casual slaughter’ that go into a motion picture’s dictum to hold ‘a mirror up to nature’ that I have witnessed (and caused) since I joined the Screen Actors Guild.”
A Dream Come True
Ailah Ahmed, who is the publishing director at Hutchinson Heinemann, the imprint that is publishing the book under Penguin Random House in the UK, said working on Hanks’ book was a dream come true.
“The fact that he has written an epic about ordinary people in a rather extraordinary world, and one that is thoughtful, poignant and hugely entertaining is icing on the cake,” Ahmed said.
Previously, Hanks released a short story collection in 2017 titled Uncommon Type, making this his second dive into fiction. The book was centered around his collection of vintage typewriters
The novel is set to be published by Penguin Random House and is set to be released on May 9, 2023 in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
