How The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Show Came to Be

J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings has made it to the big screen before but this is the first time that it will be getting a TV show. With the success of HBO’s Game of Thrones, the seeds blossomed for Tolkien’s novel to get a similar outcome. And even more expensive.

The first season alone cost $465 million! That is a lot of money and to be honest, to replicate Middle-Earth, it was going to cost a lot. Game of Thrones has shown that spending a lot of money pays off and Amazon is copying that approach. Luckily for them, The Lord of the Rings has some of, if not the best, battles in a novel.

Is the Show Going to Follow the Books?

The question everyone is going to ask is how much is going to change from the books? If I had to guess, then I would say about 10 to 20 percent. Unlike Game of Thrones, Amazon is not going to be getting feedback from the the creator. George R. R. Martin played a pivotal role in the show’s success and we saw how bad it went when they neglected his input when they ran out of source material.

The good news is that this series has a conclusion and a lot of detailed writing that should lead to a lot of seasons. My fear (which I know will be proven right in time) it all the spinoffs that will follow. There is a lot of lore and history in The Lord of the Rings and it is going to also get its own show in the near future.

That will mostly depend on the show’s success and I cannot see why this show won’t do well. Everybody has heard of The Lord of the Rings and it has a big following. Just the people from the fansite will make this show a hit. I am eager to see how Amazon approached the world-building and want too see this show do well because it is one of my favorite novels of all time.

What to Expect

It will be interesting to see how it does but I can predict it being compared to Game of Thrones constantly and even the Witcher on Netflix. I loved the Witcher and it made me read the books and I am excited for future seasons. Both shows have Elves and various other magical creatures which is why I think they will be compared a lot. But the difference is going to be the big-scale battles that LOTR has to offer whereas the Witcher is mostly focused on a couple of protagonists.

brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. The series launches globally on Prime Video on September 2, 2022.

Conclusion

Are you going to be tuning in to watch the show? I may do an episode recap of the show and if you guys enjoy it, then it can be a weekly thing. I haven’t been this excited for a new show in awhile. American Gods disappointed me but let’s hope this one does much better.
