Spoiler warning: This recap covers the endings of The Will of the Many and The Strength of the Few.

One Vis stabs Ka. Another takes his advice. The third has just won a siege when he learns that one of his counterparts has made a terrible mistake. James Islington ends The Strength of the Few with three cliffhangers that change how you read each one.

Here’s where each Vis stands at the end of Hierarchy book two, and what to remember before The Justice of One.

WorldWhat to call himWhere his story ends
ResVis Telimus, publicly known as CatenicusHe takes Ka’s help, starts waking an army of the dead, and finds his mother and sister among them.
LuceumDeaglánHe survives the siege of Caer Áras and learns that Ruarc is this world’s Caeror.
ObiteumSiamunHe reaches Ka’s pyramid in Duat and drives a knife into the motionless man he identifies as Ka.

Why are there three versions of Vis?

At the end of The Will of the Many, the ancient machinery beyond the Labyrinth replicates Vis across three worlds. Res is the world of Caten and the Academy. Luceum and Obiteum are separate worlds with their own histories, people, and uses of Will. The three versions share a past up to the split. From there, they live separate lives and make decisions with different information. That distinction matters when Ka tells one Vis something the other two have never heard.

Res: Vis starts the Cascade and finds his family

Vis returns to Caten as the celebrated winner of the Iudicium, still grieving Callidus. In Military’s secret Necropolis, he learns that Callidus claimed to be Catenicus to protect him. Meanwhile, Vis discovers Adoption, which allows him to take control of Will already imbued into objects. Ostius uses that ability to strip Military leaders of their defenses, helping set off a civil war. As the fighting worsens, Decimus kills Aequa, and Vis eventually tells Eidhin that he is Diago, the surviving prince of Suus. The alupi is also named Diago, so context matters when that name turns up. See the chapter-by-chapter recap.

With Caten burning, Vis seeks out Ka. Ka speaks through an iunctus, one of the reanimated dead. He claims that a new Cataclysm would prevent the destruction of two worlds and the enslavement of the third. He also describes the Concurrence as a network of linked dead. Those are Ka’s claims, and Vis has little time to test them.

Ka leads Vis to nearly 80,000 bodies preserved beneath the Necropolis. Over Eidhin’s objections, Vis starts the Cascade, in which the dead wake, cede Will, and help awaken others. It gives him a path to the power and numbers he thinks he needs to end the civil war. Then two of the dead recognize him. They are his mother and his sister Ysa. As he embraces them, Eidhin smiles at someone behind him, and a familiar voice says, “Hail, Vis.” The chapter ends before the speaker is identified. Callidus is a possible reading of that moment, and his return remains unconfirmed.

Luceum: Deaglán wins the siege and hears Caeror’s warning

In Luceum, Vis goes by Deaglán. Gráinne’s family takes him in, and his oath to King Rónán draws him into the conflict around Caer Áras. At the submerged city of Fornax, a trial identifies him as Synchronous. He comes away with a silver arm that he later learns to control. He also finds his father, Cristoval, alive again through a Vitaerium.

The reunion ends during the siege. Gallchobhar kills Rónán, stabs Vis, and has him thrown into Lake Áras. Cristoval gives Vis the Vitaerium sustaining his own life and dies saving him. Vis returns with the silver arm, kills Gallchobhar, and breaks the siege.

The revelation comes after the fighting. Ruarc surrenders and tells Vis that he was once called Caeror, making him the Luceum counterpart of Ulciscor’s brother. He says one of the other versions of Vis has made a terrible mistake and asks Deaglán to keep his true nature from the druids until he hears the full story. Vis agrees to listen. The book ends his strand before we learn which counterpart Ruarc means.

Obiteum: Siamun stabs Ka in Duat

The Obiteum version of Caeror is there when Vis first arrives in that world. Vis eventually enters Duat as Siamun and sees how the city runs on the labor of the reanimated dead. The Nomarch coordinates them, and even the water system depends on them. Netiqret and her daughter Kiya help Vis reach Ka’s pyramid. Kiya interferes with the Nomarch, giving him a brief opening.

Inside the pyramid, Vis finds a motionless man on an obsidian table and concludes that he is Ka. He had hoped to question him. With Gleaners breaking in, he drives a knife into the man’s heart. That is the last we see of Siamun. The strike is clear. Its effect on Ka, including his ability to act through an iunctus in Res, is still open.

What to remember before The Justice of One

The easiest way to keep the ending straight is to remember what each Vis has seen the dead do. Siamun has seen them used to keep a city running. Deaglán owes his life to a father who could make one last choice because he had been brought back. Res Vis sees a weapon that could end a war, then finds his family inside it. The same power looks different depending on whose life it saves and who gets to decide how it’s used.

That’s also why Ruarc’s warning is worth leaving open. The knife in Ka’s heart is an obvious candidate for the mistake, especially next to a scene in which another Vis relies on Ka’s help. But the Cascade gives us a second plausible candidate. Eidhin objects before Vis starts it, and the reunion with Ysa and their mother happens before anyone has to live with the full consequences. Book three inherits both decisions.
