Start with This Is Happiness if you’re new to Niall Williams’s Faha books. The novel introduces the fictional County Clare village through a teenager who arrives just as electricity is about to change daily life. If you’d rather begin with the book that introduced Faha, pick History of the Rain. And if you’re here for O Now!, you can read the new novella first. Its story centers on a friendship and a village wake, and the premise gives you all the context you need.

O Now! arrives in the U.S. and Canada on November 10, 2026. It was published in the UK and Ireland on October 8, 2026. Niall Williams’s publication announcement

Why This Is Happiness is the best place to start

Seventeen-year-old Noel Crowe is staying with his grandparents when he meets Christy, a newcomer with an old love and a reason of his own for coming to Faha. The parish is waiting for electricity. Both developments give Noel something to look forward to, and Williams takes his time showing what people do in the meantime.

Electricity is a good way into the book because it gives the whole village a stake in the story. You get the intimacy of a teenager’s first loves alongside the bigger question of what a place gains and loses when its routines change. If you plan to read just one novel before O Now!, this one gives you the clearest sense of why Williams keeps returning to Faha.

Start with History of the Rain for a book about books

Faha first appeared in History of the Rain, longlisted for the 2014 Booker Prize. Ruth Swain, ill and confined to her attic room, tries to understand her late father, Virgil, by reading the books he left behind and tracing the family stories that shaped him. This is the strongest first pick if the idea of reconstructing someone’s life from their shelves appeals to you. Where This Is Happiness gives you a village waiting for its future, History of the Rain gives you a daughter working backward through several generations. It also makes an interesting companion to O Now! Both stories ask what you can still learn about someone after they’re gone.

During Advent in 1962, a baby comes into the care of Faha’s doctor, Jack Troy, and his eldest daughter, Ronnie. Jack has spent years tending to the village while remaining somewhat apart from it. The child’s arrival gives father and daughter a reason to rethink how they belong there. Bloomsbury explicitly welcomes first-time visitors to Faha with this book.

Start here if you like a Christmas story in which doing something kind has consequences for an entire household. It’s a natural pick for readers of Claire Keegan who want another Irish story about the obligations that come with offering someone shelter. Read our Small Things Like These review

Can you read O Now! first?

O Now! by Niall Williams

Yes. Bat Considine and Mossie “Ganga” Crowe have a habit of sitting down for tea. One evening, Bat asks why God made the world. Ganga dies before Bat gets his answer, and the neighbors who gather to care for Ganga give Bat something more immediate to think about. Bloomsbury lists the U.S. hardcover at 96 pages, including an essay by Williams about the creation of Faha.

If the friendship is what drew you in, start with the novella. Then go to This Is Happiness to spend more time with the village, or choose History of the Rain to follow another character looking for answers after a loss.
