John Scalzi’s Monsters of Ohio releases on November 3, 2026, in the United States and November 5 in the UK. The novel brings a monster-sized complication to a rural town already struggling with corporate greed. Readers can try it before publication through an official free ebook preview or the excerpt on Macmillan’s website.

What makes the premise interesting is the collision between an extraordinary threat and an ordinary fear: what happens to a community when the employer that keeps it alive disappears?

What is Monsters of Ohio about?

The story takes place in Richland, Ohio, where Mike Boyd returns after spending decades away. His own life is unsettled, and his hometown is facing the loss of its biggest employer. Mike’s old friend Dave and a newcomer named Andi become part of a situation involving financial wrongdoing and a strange incident with a farmer’s cow.

The UK publisher makes the broader conflict explicit: a private equity firm has defrauded the local factory, and the community’s response takes an unexpected, tentacled turn. What begins as a local crisis could have consequences far beyond Richland.

That setup gives the book a compelling question before the creature trouble even begins. If a town’s future can be decided by people who do not live there, what power do its residents have to fight back? The speculative premise appears designed to turn that imbalance into something literal and very strange.

Is Monsters of Ohio horror or science fiction?

Macmillan categorizes the novel as science fiction. Scalzi offers a more colorful description on his own website: “Cozy Cronenberg.” He also identifies it as his twentieth novel.

That description suggests a combination of warmth and bodily weirdness, rather than a promise of a gentle read. Readers sensitive to gore should use the preview to judge their comfort level. Humor and an affectionate view of a community can coexist with disturbing creature imagery.

The free preview is an extract, not the complete book. Its August publication date should not be confused with the novel’s November release.

Why the opening is worth trying

The publisher’s excerpt opens with Mike calculating how much gasoline he can afford, then navigating an awkward reunion with a former schoolmate. The town’s economic problems emerge through their conversation.

My takeaway from that opening is that Richland’s people matter before the monster mystery does. That is a useful test for prospective readers: does the everyday dialogue draw you in? A spectacular premise can attract attention, but the people living inside it are what make the stakes matter.

For readers intrigued by small-town science fiction and a community under pressure, the free sample is a practical place to start.
