Yes. Karin Slaughter’s The Good Daughter is a standalone novel, and it’s the book to start with before watching Peacock’s adaptation. There’s a short prequel called Last Breath, which follows Charlotte “Charlie” Quinn on a different case. Read it afterward if you want more of Charlie, or start with it if you prefer to read in chronological order.

Peacock will release all six episodes on November 12, 2026. If you have time for one book before then, make it the 2017 novel. It introduces both Quinn sisters and tells the family story that brought them to television.

Why you can start with The Good Daughter

Charlie and Samantha “Sam” Quinn were girls when an attack on their family home killed their mother. Twenty-eight years later, Charlie is a lawyer in Pikeville, Georgia, where their father also practices law. When she witnesses another act of violence, the new case brings the old one back into view. The novel gives you the Quinn family history as you need it, letting your understanding of the sisters change as you learn more about the night that separated them.

Readers coming from ABC’s Will Trent can jump straight in. Charlie and Sam’s story stands on its own, separate from the Will Trent and Grant County books. The familiar territory is Slaughter’s Georgia setting and her interest in how a crime can keep reshaping a family long after the investigation ends.

Should you read Last Breath first?

Start with The Good Daughter if you want the story Peacock adapted or if you’d rather meet both sisters together. I’d save Last Breath for afterward. The short offers a chance to see Charlie at work on a case that belongs to her, once you already know what it means for her to have followed her father into law.

If you prefer chronological order, read Last Breath first. The digital short takes place before the main events of the novel, when Charlie is already a lawyer. A teenager named Flora Faulkner comes to her for help, and Charlie sees enough of her own younger self in Flora to take the case. It’s a compact introduction to the kind of client Charlie feels drawn to defend. The novel then gives Sam and the wider Quinn family room to tell their side of the story. th

What the Peacock series adapts

Peacock’s six-episode limited series is based on The Good Daughter. Slaughter wrote all six episodes and served as showrunner. Meghann Fahy plays Charlie Quinn and Rose Byrne plays Sam, with Brendan Gleeson as their father, Rusty. Both the novel and the series move between the sisters’ past and the new case, though the book sets the two events 28 years apart and Peacock describes the gap as roughly two decades.

One thing worth watching for after reading is how the series handles the shift between what Charlie remembers and what Sam remembers. On the page, the gap between their experiences gives the book some of its tension. On screen, the casting of younger versions of both sisters gives the adaptation another way to show what each girl could see and understand that night. Where to go next with Karin Slaughter

If the Quinn sisters are what keep you reading, try Pretty Girls next. It’s another standalone about sisters and the long aftermath of a family tragedy. Its investigation goes into especially graphic territory, so expect a darker follow-up.

If you’d like a recurring investigator, pick Triptych, the first Will Trent novel. If you’d rather follow Sara Linton from the beginning of the connected Grant County and Will Trent stories, choose Blindsighted first. Our Karin Slaughter books-in-order guide walks through both routes.

And if you’re here because you’ve already finished the novel and want to untangle its last reveals, go straight to The Good Daughter ending explained. That guide contains full spoilers.
