More than three decades after it was first published, I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman is not simply enjoying a brief return to the spotlight. The unsettling dystopian novel continues to attract new readers, generate discussion online and sell at a level few translated literary novels ever reach.

Transit Books reissued the novel in North America in 2022. By August 2026, the new edition had reportedly sold more than 800,000 copies in North America alone, a remarkable figure for a book originally published in French in 1995. Harpman, who died in 2012, has now become a posthumous literary sensation. The New Yorker attributes much of that extraordinary rise to social media and the novel’s growing reputation among younger readers.

But BookTok alone does not explain why the book is still becoming more popular. Its continued success comes from a rare combination of word-of-mouth recommendations, a memorable premise, contemporary political relevance and questions that readers cannot stop discussing.

What Is I Who Have Never Known Men About?

The novel follows an unnamed girl imprisoned underground with 39 adult women. Male guards watch over them, but the prisoners do not know where they are, why they have been confined or what happened to the outside world.

Unlike the other women, the girl has no memories of life before the bunker. She has never known family, romantic love or ordinary society. Her understanding of humanity comes almost entirely from observing the women around her.

Interest in I Who Have Never Known Men is now introducing readers to Jacqueline Harpman’s larger body of work.

Transit Books published We Were Forbidden, a collection of three previously untranslated stories, in 2026. The release generated another round of coverage for Harpman and encouraged readers to return to the novel that made her a BookTok phenomenon.

Transit also plans to publish more of Harpman’s previously unavailable writing in English. That creates a continuing cycle: readers discover I Who Have Never Known Men, look for her other work and then bring new attention back to the bestseller.

The novel is gradually becoming the gateway to a wider Harpman revival rather than remaining an isolated viral success.

Is I Who Have Never Known Men Worth Reading?

Readers looking for clear explanations and a traditional conclusion may find the novel frustrating. Harpman is more interested in the experience of uncertainty than in solving every mystery she introduces.

For many readers, however, that is exactly what makes the book memorable.

Its haunting atmosphere, philosophical depth and unusual narrator separate it from more conventional dystopian novels. It asks what a person becomes without family, history, social expectations or knowledge of the world that came before her.
