Brandon Sanderson fans are about to return to the Skyward universe.
Blightfall, the upcoming science-fiction novel by Brandon Sanderson and Janci Patterson, officially releases on September 1, 2026, and fans can now get an early taste of the book through a newly released audio preview of its opening chapter. The excerpt arrives just days before publication and offers the first substantial glimpse at the new adventure awaiting Skyward Flight.
More importantly, Blightfall isn’t simply another installment in the original series. It is the first novel in Riftwake, a new trilogy set in the Skyward universe following the events of Defiant.
That makes the upcoming release one of the biggest developments in Sanderson’s non-Cosmere catalog in years.

Janci Patterson explained that the book needed to accomplish two very different goals. It had to continue the stories of characters longtime Skyward readers already knew while simultaneously functioning as an accessible Book 1 for people who may not have read Sanderson’s original four-book series.
That balancing act reportedly required extensive work on the beginning of the novel.

The original Skyward saga ended a major chapter of humanity’s conflict with its alien oppressors, but Blightfall explores what happens afterward.
The story shifts its focus toward Arturo Mendez, who now leads Skyward Flight.
After years of warfare, the humans of the Defiant Defense Force are finally free. But peace introduces an entirely different set of problems.
Arturo and the rest of Skyward Flight receive what initially sounds like a relatively straightforward assignment. The DDF has discovered evidence that other human settlements may have survived in isolation elsewhere in the galaxy.
Skyward Flight is tasked with protecting a diplomatic team attempting to establish contact with one of them.
Their destination is Blightfall.
And almost immediately, the mission begins to fall apart.
The Planet Blightfall Is Hiding Something
Blightfall isn’t exactly the welcoming human colony the DDF might have hoped to discover.
The mysterious planet is surrounded by strange debris and dominated by gigantic invasive forests that have swallowed much of its surface.
When Arturo and his pilots arrive, they are attacked.
It soon becomes clear that the human settlement they’ve discovered isn’t what it first appeared to be. Stranded in an unfamiliar environment and uncertain whom they can trust, Skyward Flight must find allies while uncovering secrets buried within the planet’s history if they hope to make it home.
It is a setup that feels perfectly suited to the Skyward universe.
Sanderson’s original series gradually expanded from a relatively contained story about Spensa learning to become a pilot into a much larger adventure involving alien civilizations, galactic politics and humanity’s place in the universe.
Blightfall appears ready to push that concept even further.
Blightfall Starts the New Riftwake Trilogy
One important detail for fans is that Blightfall isn’t being positioned as Skyward Book 5.
It begins a separate trilogy called Riftwake.
Sanderson’s official website currently lists Blightfall as Book 1 of the Riftwake series, describing it as the beginning of a new trilogy featuring Skyward Flight.
That distinction allows the creators to move the larger universe forward without simply extending Spensa’s original four-book arc indefinitely.

That collaboration now expands dramatically with Riftwake.

Fans also shouldn’t have to wonder whether Blightfall will begin a trilogy that disappears for years.
Development on the remaining books is already well underway.
In Sanderson’s State of the Sanderson 2025, he confirmed that he had already read the second Riftwake novel and had received an outline for the third and final installment.
More recent updates show the project moving even further.
Sanderson has said Patterson was completing revisions on Riftwake Book 2 while continuing work on Book 3. One recent official progress update listed the third novel at 25 percent complete.
That is encouraging news for anyone considering starting the trilogy immediately.
Do You Need to Read Skyward Before Blightfall?
Surprisingly, the answer appears to be no.
At least, that was one of the goals behind the new trilogy.
Patterson has explained that the publishers wanted Blightfall to function as a genuine Book 1 even though it retains characters who have already gone through several novels’ worth of development.
That presented a difficult storytelling problem.
New readers need enough information to understand Arturo, Skyward Flight, the DDF and the broader world without receiving hundreds of pages of backstory. At the same time, established readers don’t want the opening chapters devoted to explaining events they already know.
The solution was apparently to rewrite and refine the beginning until the book could work for both audiences.
And that makes the newly released audio preview particularly useful for newcomers.

Should Existing Skyward Fans Read the Original Series First?
Absolutely.
While Blightfall may be designed as an entry point, readers who already intend to explore Sanderson’s Cytoverse will almost certainly get more from the novel after reading the earlier books.
The biggest advantage isn’t necessarily understanding the plot.
It’s knowing the characters.
Arturo and the members of Skyward Flight already have histories, relationships and experiences that were developed throughout the previous stories. Patterson herself has emphasized the importance of retaining those characters as the universe moves forward.
Reading the earlier books should therefore make their return more meaningful.
New readers can start with Blightfall, but returning readers will be experiencing the continuation of relationships they’ve followed for years.
Why Blightfall Could Be a Major Turning Point for the Skyward Universe
The most intriguing thing about Blightfall is its potential to redefine what a Skyward story can be.
The original series started with Spensa fighting for the opportunity to become a pilot.
Now humanity has survived its war and is venturing into the galaxy.
That opens the door to very different stories.
Instead of focusing entirely on survival against a known enemy, Riftwake can explore lost human settlements, alien planets, political conflicts and civilizations that developed independently after becoming isolated.
The mysterious Blightfall settlement is a perfect place to start.
The planet immediately raises questions.
What happened to the humans living there?
Why is the world covered in enormous invasive forests?
What is the debris surrounding the planet?
And why does Skyward Flight come under attack after arriving?
Those mysteries give the new trilogy an identity of its own while maintaining the fast-moving space-adventure formula that made the original books popular.
Blightfall Audiobook Details
Readers who prefer audiobooks have a substantial edition coming as well.
The Blightfall audiobook is narrated by Eddie Lopez and Suzy Jackson and has a listed runtime of 12 hours and 41 minutes. It releases alongside the print and digital editions on September 1.
The newly released preview provides an opportunity to hear the narrators before the full audiobook becomes available.
Final Thoughts on Blightfall
Defiant may have concluded Spensa’s original adventure, but Brandon Sanderson clearly isn’t finished with the Skywarduniverse.
Blightfall looks less like an unnecessary continuation and more like an attempt to launch a second generation of stories within the same universe.
Bringing Janci Patterson back is especially fitting. Her previous Skyward Flight novellas already demonstrated how effective the universe could be when the spotlight moved away from Spensa and onto the rest of the team.
Now those supporting characters have an entire trilogy.
With a mysterious new planet, familiar pilots, a new central mission and three books already in various stages of development, Riftwake could become a substantial new chapter of Sanderson’s science-fiction universe.
And fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out.
