Some books entertain you. Some books make you laugh. Some books keep you awake far later than you intended because you simply have to know what happens next. The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook by Matt Dinniman somehow manages to do all three at once.

As the third installment in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, this novel takes everything that made the previous books great and somehow improves upon it. The humor is sharper, the action is bigger, the stakes are higher, and the emotional moments hit harder than ever before. By the time I finished the final page, I knew one thing for certain: this series continues to prove why it is one of the most entertaining fantasy series being written today.

I am giving The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook five out of five stars.

If you haven’t started the Dungeon Crawler Carl series yet, stop what you’re doing and add it to your reading list. While this review will remain mostly spoiler-free, it is impossible to discuss this book without mentioning events from the earlier novels.

The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook Summary

Carl and Princess Donut have survived yet another floor of the deadly dungeon. Unfortunately for them, things are only becoming more dangerous.

As contestants in a galaxy-wide reality show where survival is entertainment, Carl and Donut must navigate increasingly deadly challenges, powerful enemies, and complicated political schemes. This time around, Carl gains access to the infamous Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook, a mysterious guide left behind by previous crawlers.

The cookbook contains knowledge, secrets, and strategies that could change everything.

But knowledge comes with a price.

As Carl learns more about the true nature of the dungeon and the forces controlling it, he begins to realize that surviving may not be enough. If he wants to protect those he cares about, he might need to start a revolution.

Matt Dinniman Continues to Raise the Bar

One of the most impressive aspects of this series is how each book somehow feels bigger than the one before it.

Many long-running fantasy series eventually become repetitive. Readers know the formula, the challenges begin to feel familiar, and the excitement starts to fade.

That has not happened here.

Matt Dinniman constantly introduces new ideas, mechanics, characters, and challenges that keep the story feeling fresh. Every floor of the dungeon feels unique and unpredictable. Just when I thought I understood where the story was heading, Dinniman introduced another twist that completely changed my expectations.

The world-building continues to expand in fascinating ways. What initially appeared to be a simple survival story has evolved into something much larger. The dungeon itself remains one of the most creative settings I have encountered in recent fantasy.

Every new revelation pulls back another layer of the mystery.

The deeper Carl ventures into the dungeon, the more readers begin to understand just how twisted and complicated this universe really is.

Carl Remains One of Fantasy’s Most Entertaining Heroes

Carl continues to be the heart and soul of this series.

What makes him such a compelling protagonist is that he feels incredibly human despite the absurd situations surrounding him. He is sarcastic, stubborn, loyal, and often overwhelmed by the insanity happening around him.

Unlike many fantasy heroes who seem destined for greatness from the beginning, Carl often feels like an ordinary person forced into extraordinary circumstances.

That relatability makes it easy to root for him.

Throughout this novel, Carl experiences significant growth. He is no longer simply reacting to events around him. He is becoming someone willing to challenge the system itself.

Watching that evolution unfold was one of my favorite aspects of the book.

Carl’s increasing frustration with the powers controlling the dungeon creates some of the novel’s strongest moments. His determination to fight back gives the story an emotional weight that balances the comedy perfectly.

Princess Donut Steals Every Scene

As great as Carl is, Princess Donut remains one of the most memorable characters in fantasy.

A talking cat should not work this well.

Yet somehow she consistently becomes one of the highlights of every book.

Donut is hilarious, dramatic, arrogant, and surprisingly lovable. Her interactions with Carl continue to provide some of the funniest moments in the entire series.

The relationship between Carl and Donut is one of the main reasons these books are so successful.

Their friendship feels genuine.

Beneath all the jokes and arguments is a bond built on trust and loyalty. That emotional connection gives readers something meaningful to hold onto amid all the chaos.

Every time Donut appeared on the page, I found myself smiling.

The Humor Is Absolutely Incredible

One of the reasons Dungeon Crawler Carl stands out from other fantasy series is its sense of humor.

This book is genuinely funny.

Not the occasional chuckle kind of funny.

The laugh-out-loud, can’t-stop-reading kind of funny.

Matt Dinniman has an incredible talent for balancing absurd comedy with serious storytelling. Whether it is bizarre dungeon mechanics, ridiculous quests, over-the-top NPCs, or Donut’s constant commentary, there is always something entertaining happening.

The humor never feels forced.

Instead, it emerges naturally from the characters and situations.

Even during intense action scenes, Dinniman finds ways to inject comedy without undermining the tension.

That balance is incredibly difficult to achieve, yet he makes it look effortless.

The Action Is Better Than Ever

If you enjoy action-packed fantasy, this book delivers in a major way.

The battles are creative, exciting, and easy to follow.

One of my biggest complaints with some fantasy novels is that combat scenes can become confusing. Readers lose track of who is where and what is happening.

That is never a problem here.

Dinniman writes action with remarkable clarity. Every fight feels purposeful and unique.

The dungeon mechanics create endless opportunities for inventive encounters, and this novel contains some of the best action sequences in the series so far.

The pacing is relentless.

Every chapter seems to introduce another challenge, another surprise, or another threat.

There were countless moments where I told myself I would read just one more chapter before stopping.

That never happened.

More Than Just a LitRPG

One thing that continues to surprise me about this series is how much depth exists beneath the surface.

At first glance, readers might assume this is simply a humorous LitRPG adventure.

It is so much more than that.

The story explores themes of power, oppression, survival, friendship, resistance, and the cost of entertainment.

As Carl uncovers more secrets about the dungeon and its creators, the narrative begins asking larger questions about exploitation and control.

These deeper themes add substance to the story without slowing down the action.

It is one of the reasons the series appeals to such a wide audience.

Even readers who typically avoid LitRPG novels may find themselves completely hooked.

Why This Book Earns Five Stars

Five-star books are rare for me. To earn that rating, a novel needs to do more than simply entertain me. It needs to leave a lasting impression.

The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook accomplished exactly that. The characters continue to grow in meaningful ways. The humor remains some of the best I have encountered in modern fantasy.

The action is thrilling. The world-building is imaginative. The pacing is nearly perfect. But most importantly, I never wanted the story to end.

Every time I finish a Dungeon Crawler Carl book, I immediately want to start the next one. That feeling is one of the clearest signs that a series is doing something special.

Matt Dinniman has created a world that is equal parts hilarious, terrifying, chaotic, and addictive.

Final Thoughts

The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook is another phenomenal entry in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series and may very well be my favorite installment so far.

It delivers everything fans could want: unforgettable characters, laugh-out-loud humor, creative world-building, intense action, and surprising emotional depth.

What began as an entertaining dungeon-crawling adventure has evolved into one of the most unique fantasy series currently available.

If you enjoy fantasy, science fiction, LitRPGs, or simply great storytelling, this series deserves a spot on your reading list.

Matt Dinniman continues to prove why Dungeon Crawler Carl has become one of the most beloved modern fantasy series among readers.
