Some books seem to appear everywhere at once.

You see them all over BookTok, Goodreads, Instagram, bestseller lists, and bookstore displays. Suddenly everyone is talking about them, and before long they become impossible to ignore. Every Summer After by Carley Fortune was one of those books.

Ever since its release, readers have been recommending it as one of the best contemporary romances in recent years. The novel developed a devoted following and quickly became a favorite among fans of emotional love stories. After hearing countless people praise it and seeing it compared to one of the most popular television adaptations in recent memory, I finally decided to pick it up and see what all the hype was about.

While I am not the biggest romance reader, I can appreciate a well-written story that combines compelling characters, emotional depth, and a relationship worth rooting for. Fortunately, Every Summer After delivers on all three fronts.

The novel is a nostalgic and heartfelt story about first love, missed opportunities, and the lingering impact of the choices we make when we’re young. Although there were a few aspects that kept it from being a perfect read for me, I can absolutely understand why so many readers have fallen in love with this book.

Every Summer After Summary

The story follows Persephone “Percy” Fraser, who spent six summers of her youth at a lake in Barry’s Bay, Ontario.

Those summers shaped her life.

They were filled with sunshine, adventure, family memories, and most importantly, Sam Florek.

Sam quickly becomes Percy’s closest friend and eventually something much more. As the years pass, their friendship develops into a deep and meaningful romance that feels destined to last forever.

At least that’s what they believe.

The novel alternates between two timelines.

In the past, readers witness Percy and Sam’s relationship grow from childhood friendship into first love. These chapters capture the excitement, awkwardness, and intensity that often come with young romance.

In the present, Percy is living in Toronto and has spent years avoiding Barry’s Bay after a devastating event destroyed her relationship with Sam.

When she receives a call informing her that Sam’s mother is dealing with a serious health issue, Percy reluctantly returns to the place she once loved.

Being back forces her to confront memories she has spent years trying to forget.

More importantly, it forces her to confront Sam.

As the story unfolds, readers slowly learn what happened between them and whether there is any possibility of repairing what was lost.

Why Readers Compare It to The Summer I Turned Pretty

One of the reasons Every Summer After exploded in popularity is because it appeals to many of the same readers who love The Summer I Turned Pretty.

The hit television series, based on Jenny Han’s bestselling novels, became a cultural phenomenon thanks to its blend of summer nostalgia, romance, friendship, family drama, and emotional coming-of-age moments.

Every Summer After captures many of those same feelings.

Both stories revolve around summers spent in a special place that becomes inseparable from the characters’ identities. Both feature young love, emotional heartbreak, and the bittersweet realization that growing up changes everything.

However, there are also important differences.

While The Summer I Turned Pretty focuses heavily on teenage relationships and coming-of-age experiences, Every Summer After feels more mature and reflective. The novel explores how our past decisions continue to affect us years later and asks whether some relationships deserve a second chance.

If you’re a fan of The Summer I Turned Pretty television series and are looking for another emotionally driven summer romance, there’s a very good chance you’ll enjoy this book.

The Strength of the Dual Timeline

One of my favorite aspects of the novel was its dual-timeline structure.

Alternating between past and present allows readers to become invested in Percy and Sam’s relationship while simultaneously trying to solve the mystery of what went wrong.

From the beginning, it’s obvious that something significant happened between them.

The tension comes from not knowing exactly what caused the fallout.

Each chapter gradually reveals another piece of the puzzle, making it difficult to stop reading.

I found myself constantly wanting to jump ahead just to discover what happened.

Fortunately, Fortune paces the revelations well enough that the mystery remains engaging throughout most of the book.

The structure also allows readers to experience both the excitement of young love and the emotional consequences that follow years later.

Percy and Sam Are Easy to Root For

Romance novels live and die based on their characters.

Readers need to care about the couple if the story is going to work.

Thankfully, Percy and Sam are easy characters to invest in.

Sam is kind, dependable, and emotionally mature. He quickly becomes the type of character readers naturally root for.

Percy is more complicated.

She makes mistakes throughout the story and occasionally frustrates both the reader and the people around her. However, those flaws make her feel realistic.

Nobody makes perfect decisions, especially when they are young.

The chemistry between Percy and Sam feels genuine, and their relationship develops naturally over the course of the novel. Rather than relying solely on dramatic romantic moments, Fortune builds their connection through years of friendship and shared experiences.

That foundation makes their relationship feel authentic.

By the time the story reaches its emotional moments, readers understand exactly why these characters matter so much to one another.

The Atmosphere Is the Real Star

If there is one thing this book absolutely excels at, it is atmosphere.

Barry’s Bay feels alive.

The lake, cabins, forests, docks, and summer traditions create a setting that becomes almost a character itself.

Reading this novel reminded me of childhood vacations and those special places that seem frozen in time.

Many readers will likely find themselves nostalgic for summers they haven’t thought about in years.

Fortune does an excellent job capturing that feeling.

Even when very little is happening plot-wise, the setting keeps the story engaging.

You can practically feel the warm sunshine, hear the water lapping against the dock, and smell the lake air.

Those details make the novel incredibly immersive.

What Kept It From Being a Five-Star Read

Although I enjoyed the novel quite a bit, it wasn’t perfect.

Without revealing spoilers, I found the central conflict somewhat divisive.

Readers tend to have strong opinions once the truth is revealed.

Some will feel the fallout between Percy and Sam makes complete sense.

Others may feel the situation is exaggerated or frustrating.

I fell somewhere in the middle.

I understood the emotional impact of what happened, but I wasn’t entirely convinced by every aspect of how the conflict unfolded.

There were also moments where the pacing slowed down more than I would have liked.

The story remains engaging overall, but there were sections that felt repetitive.

Neither issue significantly hurt my enjoyment, but they did prevent the book from reaching five-star territory.

Why Every Summer After Became a Bestseller

The success of Every Summer After makes perfect sense.

The novel combines several elements that readers consistently love:

  • Summer nostalgia
  • First love
  • Second-chance romance
  • Emotional storytelling
  • A beautiful lakeside setting
  • Strong character relationships
  • Heartbreaking moments
  • A satisfying emotional payoff

It is exactly the type of book that readers recommend to friends.

It’s also the kind of story that sparks discussion because people become emotionally invested in the characters and their decisions.

Final Thoughts

Every Summer After is a heartfelt and emotional romance that reminds readers why first love stories remain so popular.

Carley Fortune creates a compelling relationship, a memorable setting, and enough emotional tension to keep readers turning pages late into the night.

While a few plot decisions kept it from becoming a perfect read for me, the strengths far outweigh the weaknesses.

Fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty, second-chance romances, and emotionally driven contemporary fiction will find plenty to enjoy here.

The novel delivers exactly what it promises: a nostalgic, bittersweet, and deeply romantic story about love, regret, and the possibility of finding your way back to someone who once meant everything.

Rating: 4/5 Stars

Every Summer After is a beautifully written romance filled with summer nostalgia, memorable characters, and heartfelt emotion. While it isn’t without flaws, it’s easy to understand why this novel became such a massive bestseller and a favorite among romance readers. It may not have completely won me over, but it absolutely earned its place among the most talked-about romance books of the past few years.
