From the beginning, it’s obvious that something significant happened between them.

The tension comes from not knowing exactly what caused the fallout.

Each chapter gradually reveals another piece of the puzzle, making it difficult to stop reading.

I found myself constantly wanting to jump ahead just to discover what happened.

Fortunately, Fortune paces the revelations well enough that the mystery remains engaging throughout most of the book.

The structure also allows readers to experience both the excitement of young love and the emotional consequences that follow years later.

Percy and Sam Are Easy to Root For

Romance novels live and die based on their characters.

Readers need to care about the couple if the story is going to work.

Thankfully, Percy and Sam are easy characters to invest in.

Sam is kind, dependable, and emotionally mature. He quickly becomes the type of character readers naturally root for.

Percy is more complicated.

She makes mistakes throughout the story and occasionally frustrates both the reader and the people around her. However, those flaws make her feel realistic.

Nobody makes perfect decisions, especially when they are young.

The chemistry between Percy and Sam feels genuine, and their relationship develops naturally over the course of the novel. Rather than relying solely on dramatic romantic moments, Fortune builds their connection through years of friendship and shared experiences.

That foundation makes their relationship feel authentic.

By the time the story reaches its emotional moments, readers understand exactly why these characters matter so much to one another.

The Atmosphere Is the Real Star

Barry’s Bay feels alive.

What Kept It From Being a Five-Star Read

Although I enjoyed the novel quite a bit, it wasn’t perfect.

Without revealing spoilers, I found the central conflict somewhat divisive.

Readers tend to have strong opinions once the truth is revealed.

Some will feel the fallout between Percy and Sam makes complete sense.

Others may feel the situation is exaggerated or frustrating.

I fell somewhere in the middle.

I understood the emotional impact of what happened, but I wasn’t entirely convinced by every aspect of how the conflict unfolded.

There were also moments where the pacing slowed down more than I would have liked.

The story remains engaging overall, but there were sections that felt repetitive.

Neither issue significantly hurt my enjoyment, but they did prevent the book from reaching five-star territory.

The success of Every Summer After makes perfect sense.
