As someone who is constantly searching for the next great fantasy novel, I can tell you that finding one that truly stands out isn’t always easy. There are thousands of fantasy books published every year, and while many are enjoyable, only a handful leave a lasting impression long after you’ve finished reading.

That is exactly what happened when I picked up Heir by Sabaa Tahir.

I had been hearing positive things about this novel ever since its release in October 2024. It was selected as a Good Morning America YA Book Club pick and quickly became one of the most talked-about fantasy books among readers. Whenever I kept seeing people recommend it online, I figured it was finally time to see what all the excitement was about.

I’m happy to report that Heir exceeded my expectations.

Sabaa Tahir has once again proven why she is considered one of the strongest voices in young adult fantasy. With compelling characters, a fascinating magic system, emotional stakes, political intrigue, and plenty of twists, Heir delivers an unforgettable reading experience that will leave fantasy fans eagerly awaiting the next installment.

Heir Summary

Aiz has spent years fueled by anger and revenge. Determined to strike back against those responsible for her suffering, she sets a dangerous plan into motion. Unfortunately, things don’t go as expected. Instead of finding justice, Aiz’s actions put everyone she loves in grave danger.

Now she must confront the ghosts of her past and make impossible choices if she hopes to free her people from oppression and tyranny.

Meanwhile, Sirsha lives as an outcast.

Banished from her homeland, she survives by using forbidden magic to track down people for money. If her family ever discovered the truth about her powers, they would likely kill her. When she is offered a lucrative assignment to investigate a series of murders targeting children, the job seems straightforward enough.

But as Sirsha digs deeper into the mystery, she discovers forces at work that are far more dangerous than she could have imagined.

Then there is Quil.

As the nephew of the empress and heir to the throne, Quil should be preparing to lead an empire. The problem is that he doesn’t want the crown.

When his empire comes under attack, however, his future is no longer his own to decide. Forced into a desperate fight for survival, Quil must find a way to save his people, protect his loved ones, and embrace responsibilities he never wanted.

As these three storylines begin to converge, the fate of entire nations hangs in the balance.

What I Loved About Heir

One of the first things that stood out to me was the strength of the character work.

Fantasy novels often succeed or fail based on their characters. You can have the most creative magic system in the world, but if readers don’t care about the people using that magic, the story falls flat.

Thankfully, that is not a problem here.

Sabaa Tahir creates three protagonists who feel distinct, complex, and believable. Each character has different motivations, strengths, fears, and flaws. More importantly, they all experience meaningful growth throughout the novel.

I found myself invested in each storyline, which is not always the case in multi-POV fantasy books.

Usually there is at least one perspective that I find myself rushing through to get back to another character. That never happened while reading Heir.

Every chapter felt important.

Every storyline mattered.

Every character brought something unique to the table.

Sirsha Steals the Show

While I enjoyed all three protagonists, Sirsha was easily my favorite.

She has the type of personality that instantly jumps off the page.

She’s witty, clever, resourceful, and often says exactly what she is thinking. Her dialogue is consistently entertaining, and she brings energy to every scene she appears in.

What makes her particularly compelling is the tension she constantly lives with. Her magic is both a gift and a curse. She relies on it to survive, yet revealing it could cost her everything.

That internal conflict adds another layer to an already fascinating character.

I also think many readers will find Sirsha to be the most relatable character in the novel. She feels incredibly human despite living in a world filled with magic and political turmoil.

By the end of the book, she became one of my favorite fantasy characters I have read in recent years.

A Murder Mystery Hidden Inside an Epic Fantasy

One of the most interesting aspects of Heir is how it blends genres.

At its core, this is an epic fantasy filled with political intrigue, magical powers, wars, and ancient conflicts.

However, there is also a murder mystery woven throughout the story.

A killer is targeting children, and uncovering the truth behind these murders becomes one of the novel’s central plotlines.

I absolutely loved this element.

The mystery provides a strong narrative anchor that keeps readers engaged while the larger political and magical conflicts continue to unfold. It creates tension from the very beginning and gives the story an added sense of urgency.

The investigation also allows Sabaa Tahir to slowly reveal secrets about the world, its history, and its characters.

Every answer seems to raise even more questions.

Just when I thought I knew where the story was heading, another twist would completely change my expectations.

Fantastic World building

Sabaa Tahir excels at creating immersive worlds, and Heir is no exception.

The world feels rich and lived-in.

Different regions have unique cultures, traditions, and relationships with magic. Rather than overwhelming readers with endless exposition, Tahir gradually reveals details throughout the story.

As a result, the world feels natural instead of forced.

I especially enjoyed learning how magic functions differently depending on where characters come from. This approach helps make the setting feel larger and more complex while also adding depth to the various conflicts throughout the novel.

The political tensions between nations also add another layer to the story.

There are battles being fought on multiple fronts, and every decision carries significant consequences.

The Supporting Cast Is Outstanding

Another strength of Heir is its supporting cast.

Far too often, secondary characters exist solely to help move the plot forward.

That is not the case here.

Characters like Ra and Quil’s companions feel fully realized and memorable. Even when they aren’t at the center of the story, they contribute meaningfully to the narrative.

Many fantasy novels focus so heavily on their main characters that everyone else feels interchangeable.

Sabaa Tahir avoids that trap.

The relationships between characters are some of the strongest parts of the novel, and many of my favorite moments came from the conversations they shared.

In fact, the dialogue throughout the book is exceptional.

Days after finishing the novel, I still found myself thinking about certain interactions between characters.

That is usually a sign that an author has done something special.

Plot Twists That Keep You Guessing

Fantasy readers know that plot twists can be difficult to execute well.

Some are predictable.

Others exist purely for shock value.

The best twists feel surprising while also making perfect sense once they happen.

Thankfully, Heir delivers plenty of those moments.

Several times throughout the novel, I thought I had figured out where the story was going.

I was wrong.

Sabaa Tahir consistently keeps readers guessing without making the story feel convoluted. Every revelation feels earned and adds new layers to the larger narrative.

The final portion of the novel is especially difficult to put down.

Once all the pieces begin falling into place, the pacing accelerates and the stakes become enormous.

Final Thoughts

Heir is one of the best fantasy novels I have read recently.

It combines memorable characters, excellent worldbuilding, engaging mysteries, emotional moments, political intrigue, and shocking twists into one highly entertaining package.

The story never drags, the characters feel authentic, and the dialogue is some of the strongest I have encountered in a fantasy novel this year.

I picked up this book because I kept hearing positive things about it, and now I completely understand why readers have embraced it.

If you enjoy fantasy novels with rich world building, compelling character arcs, dangerous magic, and plenty of surprises, then Heir deserves a place on your reading list.

As someone whose favorite genre is fantasy, I can confidently say this is a novel that lived up to the hype.

And now, like countless other readers, I am eagerly waiting for the next book.

Rating: 5/5 Stars

Heir is a fantastic fantasy novel that showcases everything Sabaa Tahir does best. With unforgettable characters, excellent storytelling, and a world you’ll want to revisit, this is an easy recommendation for fantasy fans.
