After finishing Dungeon Crawler Carl, I immediately understood why so many readers were obsessed with the series. The combination of absurd humor, unforgettable characters, brutal action, and surprisingly emotional moments made it one of the most entertaining books I had read in quite some time. Naturally, I jumped straight into Carl’s Doomsday Scenario by Matt Dinniman, hoping the sequel would maintain that momentum.
What I didn’t expect was for it to be even better.
Carl’s Doomsday Scenario takes everything that made the first book great and somehow improves upon it. The world becomes larger, the challenges become more creative, the humor gets even sharper, and the relationships between the characters continue to evolve in meaningful ways. By the time I finished the novel, I was completely invested in Carl and Princess Donut’s journey and eager to continue the series.
If you enjoyed the first book, this sequel is absolutely essential reading. If you’re looking for one of the best LitRPG series currently available, Carl’s Doomsday Scenario proves that Matt Dinniman is operating at a level few authors in the genre can match.
Carl’s Doomsday Scenario Summary
Following the events of the first book, Carl and Princess Donut continue their fight for survival inside the deadly intergalactic dungeon that has become Earth’s greatest nightmare.
The alien-controlled dungeon remains a twisted reality television show where contestants battle monsters, solve puzzles, complete quests, and attempt to survive increasingly dangerous levels. As Carl and Donut descend deeper into the dungeon, they discover that survival isn’t the only challenge. Political intrigue, hidden agendas, and powerful forces operating behind the scenes begin to reveal themselves.
The dungeon itself becomes more complex and unpredictable while Carl and Donut face new enemies, impossible situations, and difficult decisions that impact not only their future but potentially the future of humanity.
As the stakes continue to rise, Carl must find ways to outsmart opponents who possess overwhelming advantages while navigating a game that seems designed to destroy him.
The World Building Continues to Impress
One of the biggest strengths of the series remains Dinniman’s incredible imagination.
The dungeon concept could have easily become repetitive. After all, how many monster fights and dungeon levels can a series realistically sustain before readers lose interest?
The answer, apparently, is quite a lot when handled by an author as creative as Matt Dinniman.
Every new area introduced in Carl’s Doomsday Scenario feels unique and memorable. The challenges never feel recycled, and the dungeon continues to surprise both the characters and readers. The author constantly introduces bizarre mechanics, strange creatures, and ridiculous situations that somehow make perfect sense within the established world.
What impressed me most was how naturally Dinniman expands the mythology surrounding the dungeon. Rather than dumping information on readers, he gradually reveals new details about the universe, the alien civilizations, and the forces controlling the game.
Each revelation raises new questions while making the world feel increasingly alive.
Carl Continues to Be an Outstanding Protagonist
Carl remains one of my favorite protagonists in modern fantasy and science fiction.
He’s not the strongest character in the dungeon. He’s not the smartest person in every room. He’s not a chosen one destined to save the universe.
Instead, Carl succeeds because he refuses to quit.
Throughout the novel, readers watch him adapt to increasingly impossible circumstances. He makes mistakes, learns from them, and continues moving forward despite overwhelming odds.
That resilience makes him incredibly easy to root for.
What separates Carl from many protagonists in the genre is his humanity. Beneath the sarcastic exterior and action-hero moments is someone genuinely struggling to process the destruction of his world while protecting the people he cares about.
Dinniman never loses sight of that emotional core.
Even during the funniest moments in the book, Carl feels like a real person reacting to extraordinary circumstances.
Princess Donut Steals Every Scene
As much as I enjoy Carl, Princess Donut might be the true star of the series.
The talking cat could have easily become a one-note joke. Instead, she’s one of the most entertaining characters I’ve encountered in fantasy.
Her dialogue remains consistently hilarious throughout the novel.
Every time she appears, there is a good chance something ridiculous is about to happen. Yet beneath the comedy, Dinniman continues developing her character in surprising ways.
The friendship between Carl and Donut remains the heart of the series.
Their banter is genuinely funny, but their loyalty to one another provides many of the story’s emotional moments. The relationship never feels forced, and their interactions help balance the darker elements of the narrative.
It’s rare for a fantasy series to create a duo this memorable.
The Humor Is Better Than Ever
One of the reasons Dungeon Crawler Carl stands out from other fantasy and LitRPG series is its sense of humor.
This book is genuinely funny.
Not “occasionally amusing.”
Actually funny.
I found myself laughing throughout the novel thanks to Dinniman’s sharp dialogue, absurd scenarios, and willingness to fully embrace the ridiculousness of the premise.
The book constantly walks a difficult line between comedy and horror.
One moment you’re laughing at Princess Donut’s latest comment, and the next you’re witnessing something horrifying inside the dungeon. Somehow those tonal shifts never feel jarring.
Instead, they enhance one another.
The humor prevents the darker moments from becoming overwhelming, while the darker moments ensure the story never becomes a parody.
Finding that balance is incredibly difficult, yet Dinniman makes it seem effortless.
The Stakes Feel Real
Despite the humor, Carl’s Doomsday Scenario never loses its tension.
One of my favorite aspects of the series is that actions have consequences.
Characters can fail.
Plans can go wrong.
Victories often come with significant costs.
Because of this, every challenge feels meaningful.
I never found myself assuming Carl would automatically succeed simply because he’s the protagonist. The dungeon is dangerous, unpredictable, and frequently unfair.
That uncertainty creates genuine suspense.
Several moments had me wondering how Carl and Donut would possibly survive their latest predicament.
When a story can consistently surprise readers while maintaining credibility, it becomes difficult to put down.
This sequel accomplishes exactly that.
More Than Just a LitRPG
I’ve said before that one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding LitRPG is that it’s only about stats, levels, and game mechanics.
The best books in the genre use those elements as tools to tell compelling stories.
Carl’s Doomsday Scenario is a perfect example.
Yes, there are quests, achievements, levels, and upgrades.
But the story is really about survival, friendship, resistance, and maintaining your humanity in an environment designed to strip it away.
Readers who typically avoid LitRPG may be surprised by how accessible this series feels.
The game mechanics enhance the narrative rather than dominate it.
Even if you’ve never read a LitRPG before, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy this series.
Why the Series Continues to Grow in Popularity
It’s easy to see why Dungeon Crawler Carl has become one of the most recommended fantasy series online.
The books combine multiple genres in a way that appeals to a wide audience.
Fans of fantasy will appreciate the world-building.
Science fiction readers will enjoy the larger universe and alien civilizations.
Gamers will love the dungeon mechanics.
Comedy fans will appreciate the humor.
And readers simply looking for a compelling story will find plenty to enjoy.
Few series manage to appeal to so many different audiences without sacrificing quality.
Matt Dinniman has accomplished exactly that.
Final Thoughts
Carl’s Doomsday Scenario is everything I want from a sequel.
It expands the world, develops the characters, raises the stakes, and delivers an even more entertaining story than its predecessor. Matt Dinniman continues to prove why Dungeon Crawler Carl has become one of the most beloved series in fantasy and LitRPG.
What began as a seemingly ridiculous premise—a man and his cat competing in a deadly alien dungeon reality show—has evolved into one of the most engaging and addictive series I’ve read.
The action is exciting, the humor consistently lands, the character development is strong, and the story keeps getting better with every installment.
If you enjoyed Dungeon Crawler Carl, you need to read Carl’s Doomsday Scenario. If you’re still debating whether to start the series, this sequel is proof that the hype surrounding Matt Dinniman’s books is absolutely justified.
For me, this was another easy five-star read and one of the most entertaining books I’ve picked up this year.
