There is something special about a book that completely takes over your life for a day. The kind of book where you tell yourself you are only going to read one more chapter and suddenly it is 3 AM and you are still turning pages because you need to know what happens next.
Those are the best kinds of reading experiences.
Every reader has at least one book they could not put down. A novel so addictive that real life basically disappeared for a few hours. And honestly, those books are the reason many of us became readers in the first place.
For this list, we looked at some of the most popular answers from a Goodreads discussion where readers shared the books they finished in 24 hours or less. Some of these novels are emotional rollercoasters. Others are fast-paced thrillers with shocking twists. And a few are simply so immersive that you lose track of time while reading them.
What I found interesting is how varied these books are. There is historical fiction, literary fiction, fantasy, romance, dystopian fiction, and psychological thrillers. The one thing they all have in common is that readers simply could not stop reading.
Here are some of the most addictive books readers finished in one sitting.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Few modern novels have exploded in popularity quite like The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. It feels like every reader has either read this book already or plans to read it soon.
And honestly, I understand why.
The novel follows aging Hollywood icon Evelyn Hugo as she finally tells the truth about her glamorous and scandal-filled life. What starts off as a celebrity story slowly becomes something much deeper and more emotional.
This book thrives on mystery. You constantly want to know more about Evelyn, her relationships, and the secrets she has hidden for decades. Every chapter reveals another layer to her character and it becomes impossible not to keep reading.
It also helps that Taylor Jenkins Reid writes in a very accessible style. The chapters move quickly and there is never a dull moment.
This is one of those books where you keep saying “just one more chapter” until suddenly the book is over.
Pachinko by Min Jin Lee
At first glance, Pachinko does not look like a book people would finish in a day. It is long, emotional, and spans generations.
But once you start reading it, it completely pulls you in.
The novel follows a Korean family living in Japan across several decades and explores identity, discrimination, sacrifice, survival, and family legacy. It is one of the most beautifully written historical fiction novels I have read in years.
What makes this novel so addictive is how attached you become to the characters. You genuinely care about what happens to them and you keep reading because you become emotionally invested in their lives.
This is the kind of novel that reminds you why historical fiction can be so powerful.
Verity by Colleen Hoover
Whether you love Colleen Hoover or not, there is no denying that Verity is ridiculously addictive.
This psychological thriller follows struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh after she is hired to finish a successful book series for injured author Verity Crawford. While staying at the Crawford home, Lowen discovers a hidden manuscript that changes everything.
This book is pure chaos in the best possible way.
The pacing is incredibly fast and every chapter ends with something shocking enough to force you into reading the next one immediately. It is one of those novels that practically demands to be binge-read.
And yes, the ending will absolutely divide readers.
Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman
This novel surprised a lot of readers because it sounds much quieter than many of the thrillers on this list. But emotional investment can be just as addictive as suspense.
Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine follows a socially awkward woman whose lonely and carefully structured life slowly begins to change after forming unexpected friendships.
What makes this novel work so well is Eleanor herself. She is awkward, funny, frustrating, heartbreaking, and incredibly human. Watching her slowly open up emotionally makes this book impossible to stop reading.
It is both funny and deeply emotional at the same time, which is not easy to pull off.
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
The Midnight Library became one of the biggest books on social media for a reason.
The story follows Nora Seed, a woman who finds herself inside a magical library between life and death. Each book inside allows her to experience a different version of her life based on choices she could have made.
This is one of those novels that instantly hooks readers because the concept itself is fascinating.
Everyone has wondered how their life could have turned out differently if they made different decisions. This novel takes that idea and turns it into an emotional and thought-provoking story about regret, depression, hope, and happiness.
Some readers connect deeply with the emotional themes while others simply enjoy exploring the alternate lives Nora experiences.
Either way, it is very easy to finish this book in one sitting.
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Few books dominated bestseller lists quite like Where the Crawdads Sing.
This novel blends historical fiction, mystery, romance, and coming-of-age storytelling into one extremely readable package. It follows Kya Clark, known as the “Marsh Girl,” as she grows up isolated in the marshes of North Carolina.
The atmosphere is one of the strongest aspects of the novel. The marsh feels alive and immersive, almost like another character in the story.
Readers also become deeply invested in Kya’s journey and the mystery surrounding the murder investigation tied to her life.
This book sparked a lot of conversation online and became one of the defining novels of the past decade.
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
I honestly think Khaled Hosseini writes some of the most emotionally devastating books ever created.
A Thousand Splendid Suns follows two Afghan women whose lives become connected through war, tragedy, and survival. It is heartbreaking, powerful, and beautifully written.
This is not an easy read emotionally, but it is absolutely unforgettable.
The emotional intensity of the story makes it difficult to stop reading because you become so invested in the characters and their struggles. Many readers finish this book in a single day despite how heavy it can be.
Just be prepared emotionally before going into it.
I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb
This is another massive novel that somehow still manages to feel impossible to put down.
The story follows Dominick Birdsey as he struggles to care for his paranoid schizophrenic twin brother while dealing with family trauma and personal pain.
This book is emotionally exhausting in the best way possible. It digs deeply into grief, family, mental illness, and identity.
It is not necessarily fast-paced, but the emotional storytelling keeps readers completely invested from beginning to end.
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
The Nightingale is one of the best historical fiction novels I have ever read.
The story follows two sisters in Nazi-occupied France during World War II and explores survival, resistance, sacrifice, and love during wartime.
Kristin Hannah does an incredible job balancing emotional storytelling with historical detail. The novel constantly pulls at your emotions while also keeping the plot moving at a strong pace.
This is one of those books that leaves readers emotionally destroyed by the end.
And yes, there is a very good chance you will cry.
The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
If we are talking about books readers binge in one sitting, then The Silent Patient absolutely deserves to be here.
The novel follows Alicia Berenson, a famous painter who shoots her husband and then refuses to speak another word. Criminal psychotherapist Theo Faber becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth behind the murder.
This book works because of one thing: suspense.
Every chapter pushes the mystery forward just enough to keep you hooked. You constantly feel like you are close to uncovering the truth, only for the novel to pull you deeper into the mystery.
And then comes the twist.
The plot twist completely changed how I viewed the entire novel and instantly made me understand why this book became so popular.
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
Fredrik Backman has a talent for creating deeply emotional stories with lovable characters.
A Man Called Ove follows a grumpy old man whose lonely routine begins to change after new neighbors move in nearby.
What starts as a funny story slowly becomes something far more emotional and heartfelt. Ove is one of those characters who grows on you more and more with every chapter.
This novel perfectly balances humor and sadness, which makes it incredibly bingeable.
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
This is one of the most unique books on this list because it is narrated by a dog.
And somehow, it works incredibly well.
The story follows Enzo, a dog who reflects on the life of his owner Denny, a race car driver dealing with personal struggles and family issues.
This novel is emotional from start to finish and animal lovers especially will struggle not to cry while reading it.
It is heartfelt, emotional, and surprisingly inspiring.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
It is honestly impressive that a novel written over 200 years ago still feels this addictive to readers.
Pride and Prejudice remains one of the most beloved romance novels of all time thanks to its sharp dialogue, memorable characters, and iconic romance between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy.
Jane Austen’s wit still holds up remarkably well today.
Once readers get invested in the relationship drama and social tension, it becomes very difficult to stop reading.
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
The Road is one of the bleakest books I have ever read, but also one of the most unforgettable.
The story follows a father and son traveling through a post-apocalyptic world while trying to survive.
McCarthy’s writing style is stripped down and haunting, which creates an atmosphere of constant tension and dread. The relationship between the father and son gives the novel its emotional core.
This is not a comfortable read, but it is absolutely gripping.
Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
Of course the Harry Potter books made this list.
These novels basically defined an entire generation of readers and introduced millions of people to fantasy. The world-building, magic system, characters, and mysteries make the series incredibly addictive.
There is a reason readers lined up at midnight for new releases.
The later books are definitely long enough to make finishing them in one sitting difficult, but I absolutely believe readers powered through them anyway.
Especially Deathly Hallows.
Conclusion
These are the kinds of books readers dream about finding. The novels that completely consume your attention and make the outside world disappear for a few hours.
Some of these books are emotional masterpieces while others rely on suspense and shocking twists. But all of them have one thing in common: readers could not stop turning the pages.
And honestly, that is one of the best feelings a book can give you.
How many of these books have you read? Which books did you finish in a single sitting? Let me know because I am always looking for another addictive read. Until next time, happy reading!

I didn’t read The Midnight Library in a day but it was a fantastic book.
Same. Loved every second of it
