Today, we will be looking at the best books of all time according to Goodreads. The liar includes iconic novels and the novel that topped the list will surprise you. Keep reading to find out which books were voted as Goodreads best books of all time!
I love looking at lists of the best books of all time and seeing which books were chosen and which were left out. Every list is going to get it wrong and it shouldn’t be taken to heart.
Goodreads let voters decide the best books of all time and it has led to some interesting results. No matter how many guesses you get, I doubt you’ll correctly guess the best book chosen by voters.
For the most part, many of the books that made the list deserved it. But there are some fun names that make an appearance. You can see the full list below!
Goodreads’ Best Five Books of All Time List
- The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins
- Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
- The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter, #5) by J.K. Rowling
The Hunger Games Tops the List

I was surprised to see The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins voted as the best book of all time. It received over 44,000 votes, almost 14,000 more than the next book on the list. Not everyone will agree with this pick but it is hard to argue that this novel isn’t a fantastic read.
I really enjoyed this book and I can see why it has a such a big fan base. As a fan of dystopian novels, I am thankful for what The Hunger Games did for the genre. And while that phase came and went, this series has stood the test of time. The writing, plot, and storytelling have made a novel that has come to define a genre.
Pride and Prejudice

If I had to guess what book would have topped this list, I would have said Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. It is a beloved novel on Goodreads and has resurged in recent years.
Even though I don’t read much romance novels, I enjoyed Pride and Prejudice and can see why people love Jane Austen. Her characters are fun and there is never a dull moment. The novel ended up receiving over 30,000 votes which is still a lot.
To Kill a Mockingbird

My pick for the best book of all time would easily be To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This novel is considered by many as the greatest American novel written and I can see why.
If it wasn’t for this novel, I don’t know if I would have fallen in love with reading. I might be biased but I am still glad to see this novel high on the list. It ended up receiving just a little under 27,000 votes.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
I was surprised to see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling coming in at fourth. It isn’t my favorite Harry Potter novel but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It is the novel that the war finally starts taking place so maybe that’s why it was the first Harry Potter to make the list.
Lists like these are good reasons to revisit this series and see why so many love this series. I know it is hard when Rowling makes it difficult to be a fan of the series but you have to dive the art from the artist. This novel got a bit over 21,000 votes
The Book Thief

In fifth place, we have The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I would put this second on the list if I could and it is one of my favorite novels.
Seeing two of my favorite novels make the list is a nice feeling. This novel has a special place in my heart and it is good to know that many people feel the same. Novels like these is how many people fall in love with reading.
Conclusion
These are the Goodreads five bast books of all time and it is a good list. The Hunger Games resonated with many Goodreads and was one of the first books for many users back in the day.
I like the list for the most part and can’t really argue against it. I can see the appeal of all the books and there’s a good chance they all would make my top ten list.
Seeing two of my all time favorite novels on the list might be why I am mostly okay with it. You can see the full list here and see how many more books made the list.
