Today, we will be reviewing Second Life Executioner by J.R. Wales, a Lit RPG novel. Keep reading to find out what we thought of this novel and if you should read it next!
Early this year, I wanted to read a Lit RPG novels and one of the books I chose to read early on was this one. After reading Monk of Black Flames by Wales, I knew I wanted to read his other works. Which is how I ended up picking up this book.
Second Life Executioner Summary
Darius was an execution born to serve. He mastered the Blade Technique that has been passed down his family for generations. But for his loyalty, Darius is executed.
However, Darius wakes up and finds himself in a new world. He is in a dungeon that is home to strange creatures. A System tells him of his levels and abilities and Darius plans to master it to become as strong as he possibly can. To do that, he must rely on training from his past life and adapt it to this new world.
I loved every second of this novel and I have to give credit to the pacing of this novel. There is never a dull moment and it is easy to follow. Wales and Richmond keep things fun and yet simple. Darius is a relatable protagonist and I will be tuning into this series in the future as well.
Commentary
I really enjoyed this novel and the storytelling by Wales. It is a refreshing Lit RPG novel that gets right into the action and doesn’t try to set up the character or scene too much. Too many Lit RPG novels focus on the world building too much and try to give you too much information all at once.
Wales, however, cares about the story and the pacing is fast so there is never a dull moment. It is why I ended up reading two novels by Wales in a short time. After reading his novels, you can appreciate his style and pacing because that isnt the norm in this genre.
Besides the pacing, I also love the creative plots he creates for his books, That are clever, fun, and easy to follow along to. I am sure Wales could make it convoluted but chooses not to, instead focusing on the story itself.
If you are new to this genre like I am, then Wales is a fun introduction. You might end up believing all Lit RPG novels are like this and that is just not true. But what you will get is a fun action packed novel that you will end up reading in a few days.
Conclusion
I strongly recommend reading Second Life Executioner and Monk of Black Flames by Wales if you are curious about Lit RPG novels. I have read a dozen or so and these novels and his are near the top of my list.
In the near future, I will be sharing even more Lit RPG novels and then switch it up and focus on a new genre. But until then, I will be trying to discover the best Lit RPG novels and see which ones are the best of the best. Until next time, happy reading!
