Fourth Wing

When Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros was first released in April 2023, nobody expected it to become one of the most popular novels of the 2020s. The success of that novel led to the second book in the series to be released a couple of months later.

It was obvious that the publishers wanted to ride the wave of the recent success. But little did they know that this novel was not just a moment but a series that would only keep getting more popular with each passing day. I enjoyed this novel a lot and loved and can see why it has dominated charts since publications.

20-year-old Violet Sorrengail is forced to enter the Rider Quadrant by her mother who is a general and the commander of the college. Violet always dreamed of being a scribe, people who document the history of their country Navarre. But now, Violet has to put her life on the line in the war college.

Both of Violet’s older siblings graduated from the Rider Quadrant and became legends. But Violet is not like them. She is small and fragile and hasn’t received training to become a fighter. And her last name means that she has a target on her back as well as being the weak link.

But Violet will do anything to survive the dangerous tests as well as bond with a dragon. To do that, she needs to outwit her opponents and prove to everyone that she is capable of becoming a warrior no matter the risk

The Women

Kristin Hannah has been one of my favorite authors for a decade ever since I read The Nightingale. All her novels are incredible and I recommend her to anyone who enjoys reading books that resonate with your soil.

The Women tells the story about the women who served in Vietnam but their service was neglected and ignored and their trauma was belittled by the public and by men who served in Vietnam. Hannah does a beautiful job of telling this heart-wrenching story and it is one that she has wanted to tell for a long time.

“For years, I wanted to write about the turbulence and chaos and division of the times, but it wasn’t until the pandemic, when I was on lockdown in Seattle, confined to my home essentially, and watching our nurses and doctors serving on the front lines of the pandemic, becoming exhausted amid the political division of the time that it all came together for me,” Hannah said in an interview with LibraryThing. “That’s when I knew I was ready to write about the women who served in the war and were forgotten at home.”

I have to admit, I haven’t read many books about the Vietnam War. It is a war that many Americans want to forget but for many people, it is a part of their identity and experience. I recommend people to check out The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen to learn even more about this horrible war and its impact.

James

I loved every second of James by Percival Everett which is why I am glad that it made the list. This novel is perfect in my opinion and it deserved to win the National Book Award for Fiction, and the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

While there was some controversy surrounding the Pulitzer Prize award, I am glad that it did end up winning it. After seeing this novel everywhere, I knew I had to read it no matter what. And still it surpassed all of my expectations. If this novel didn’t make the list, then I would have been furious. 

James is a retelling of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and gives James the voice he always deserved. Everett tells us of James’ story and from his point of view and it is an amazing and well written novel.

James is a slave in Hannibal, Missouri and tries to take care of all the slaves at the plantation. But one day, James discovers that he is going to be sold soon and separated from his family. He has no plans to go along with this and instead runs away. But he is discovered by Huckleberry Finn who is also planning to run away.

If you had to read one book that was released in 2024, then this is the one I recommend. There are a bunch of others I would recommend after but James is just that good for me to put it anywhere but first on my list.

Demon Copperhead

One of my favorite historical fiction books that I read in 2025 was Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. It was also the recipient of the2023 Pulitzer Prize along with Trust by Hernan Diaz and won the Women’s Prize for Fiction. With these two prestigious accolades, I knew I had to read this novel.

The story follows Damon Fields, better known as Demon, and his single mother. They live in a trailer home in Lee, County, located in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. Demon’s life is difficult takes a turn for the worse when his mom starts dating a guy who abuses Demon. 

Things go from bad to worse and Demon tries to make the best of his situation as he tries to survive and overcome his situation. The novel is a retelling of David Copperfield by Charles Dickens in the 21^st century and is a must read for anyone that enjoyed the classic novel.
