Fantasy lovers will be happy to know that 2025 is yet another great year for their favorite genre. So, keep reading to find out the most read fantasy books of 2025 so far!

If you are like me, then your favorite genre is also fantasy and you are always searching for new fantasy books to read. You have arrived at the right place because there are a bunch of incredible books on this list that you need to read.

I have read nine of the twelve books on this list and hope to make it 12 out of 12 soon. And for the books I have read, I can say that they were all great novels and ones I am glad to have read. This list includes novels from the past couple of years and all of these have been great fantasy novels.

What I love about this list is that is includes fantasy novels that aren’t your typical fantasy books. Books like The Midnight Library and Before the Coffee Gets Cold are underrated gems that everyone needs to read. You can see the full list below!

The Most Read Fantasy Books of 2025

The Midnight Library

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
The Midnight Library book review

I decided to read The Midnight Library by Matt Haig after seeing the beautiful book cover. And I am glad that I did because it was a beautiful novel that made me cry. The message of the novel is one that many people need to hear.

If you had to read one fantasy book this year, then make sure that it is this one. Books like these always help me calibrate and remember to not overburden yourself. And that book cover will look amazing on your bookshelf!

The House in the Cerulean Sea

Another book with a beautiful book cover is The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune. Fantasy novels with beautiful book covers seem to always be great from my personal experience. This novel by Klune us fantastic and a great addition to the genre and is unlike any other book out there.

The novel is about a man named Linus Baker who is given the task of determining if six magical children will cause the destruction of the world. His visits to the orphanage show him another side that his job neglects. Can he provide these children and orphanage the help they need?

The Song of Achilles

historical fiction books
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller tells the story of Achilles, “the best of all the Greeks”, through the point of view of Patroclus, a banished prince. They fall in love and try to outrun fate that tells the death of Achilles in the Trojan War.

Even if you don’t know much Greek mythology, you will enjoy this fantastic novel. Miller does an amazing job of fleshing out characters like Patroclus and Achilles. From the first page, you will be hooked in this novel. And for some, the ending will not be a surprise but you will enjoy the journey and how the novel gets there.

Babel

One of my favorite recent fantasy novels has to be Babel by R.F. Kuang. The magic system, world building, and historical knowledge made this an amazing book to read. The etymology and inclusion of different languages also made this an educational read.

Babel takes place in 1812 and tells the story of Robin Swift, an orphan who is brought to London by Professor Lovell. Robin is taught various languages in preparation for his enrollment at Oxford’s Royal Institute of Translation program which is also known as Babel.

Magic is practiced at Babel and Robin learns how to use it to serve Britain. But serving Babel means that Robin is going against his own county as a result. When Britain decides to go to war against China, Robin must decide who he will side with.

Circe

One of my favorite mythology novels that I have read has to be Circe by Madeline Miller. Circe is unlike her powerful father Zeus nor attractive like her mother. That leads her to turning to mortals for companionship and she soon discovers that she can do witchcraft and turn enemies into monsters that can challenge the gods.

Zeus fears her powers and decides to ban her to a deserted island. But little did he know the Circe would master her craft and meet with some of the most figures in mythology including Odysseus. I loved this take on Circe by Miller and giving an overlooked god the story she deserves.

Brandon Sanderson

Fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson has three books that made the list which is an impressive feat. I am a big Sanderson fan and as I have two of these three novels, I can say they are even better than advertised.

The Mistborn series and The Way of Kings series are both amazing fantasy series and high on my list. His world building, character development, and magical systems are unmatched. Tress of the Emerald Sea is on my to-read list and I have only heard good things about it!

Conclusion

I can keep going on and on about all the fantastic books on this list. Any book by Brandon Sanderson is a must read and this list has three by him. R.F. Kuang is becoming one go my favorite authors and she has two fantastic novels that made the list. I am a bigger fan of Babel and loved everything about it.

Madeline Miller’s novels are a retelling of Greek tales and both novels on this list are incredible. Before the Coffee Gets Cold is a beautiful novel that will make you cry and appreciate the time you do have together with your loved ones.

No matter what book you choose from this list, you are in good hands. I can’t wait to see how this list longs by the end of the year. Until next time, happy reading!
