Today, we will be reviewing The Broken Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin, the second book in the Inheritance Trilogy. Keep reading to find out what we thought of this novel and if you should read it next!
The Broken Kingdoms Summary
A decade after the events of A Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, we are introduced to Oree Shoth, a young blind artist living in Sky, which has been renamed Shadow, after the World Tree appeared a decade ago. One day, Oree meets a homeless man who glows like the sun and Oree lets him stay at her house, even though he says little.
While working one day, Oree discovers the dead body of a godling and that upends her life as she knows it. Suddenly, she is being pursued by the Itempan Order, who think she is involved with the murder.
Madding, a godling and Oree’s former lover, tries to help her as they try to find the true killer. But when she and her friends are caught up in a conspiracy that goes back decades, the fate of the world as she knows it is at stake. And she and her friends are not safe from being the next ones murdered if they don’t stop the killers.
Commentary
The Broken Kingdoms picks up the pieces and the consequences of the events of A Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. Jemisin continues the story of the world she created and it feels perfect. It feels like Jemisin always knew what events were going to follow for this series and I loved every second of it.
This novel went on to win the Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award for Fantasy in 2010. Yes, the novel has a lot of romance in it but Jemisin does a great job of balancing the two. The story and plot are always developing and there are a ton of plot twists that will keep you entertained the whole time.
If you love fantastic worldbuilding and even better writing, then Jemisin’s novels are written just for you. And her ability to flesh out various characters effortlessly makes her a must read.
Conclusion
Jemisin is quickly becoming one of my favorite fantasy writers. I will be reading all her books and can’t wait to see what else she does in the future. I enjoyed this novel and series and I can’t rave about it enough. Fantasy lovers should read this series and novel and find out why Jemisin has become a household name over the past 15 years. Happy reading!
