Chapter 3 Crime Never Pays
“This is the police, open up.” I said, muffling my voice, to sound deeper and not as scared as I felt. “We got a report of a disturbance and suspicious characters. If you don’t open up, we will have to use excess force and take everyone in for questioning.”
I hoped I sounded more intimidating than how I felt. I put my ear to the door, my hands on my gun, a Colt M1911, hoping to be prepared for every outcome. “Shit, the police are here,” I heard someone say. “We got to get out of here boss.”
Vito, please listen to them. I don’t like my odds and don’t want to find out whose luck holds out tonight. This was going to be a coinflip and I always wait till the last second to make my call.
“Fuck, we can’t get involved with the police,” Vito responded angrily.
I heard footsteps running away from the door and heard a door being opened and closed. They are fleeing but I have to make sure that they aren’t going to circle around me and slowly walked to the corner of the warehouse and saw three figures running away, losing sight of them as they turned the corner.
I exhaled and walked back to the door and turned the door handle and walked in, wishing I hadn’t the second after.
Frankie was sitting on the chair, his face covered in blood and his blonde hair ruffled. He was crying and laughing, realizing that he won’t be the latest body dumped into the river. I walked over and told him that everything is all right and looked for a crowbar to break open the handcuffs.
As soon as I opened the handcuffs, Frankie grabbed my arm with both his hands and said “Thank you,” sniffling as his tears ran down his face.
“Don’t thank me Frankie, thank the girl that cares about you even after she knows what kind of person you are.” I didn’t want to be saving someone like Frankie but even a lowly criminal like him deserves to live. He hasn’t crossed the line to a coldhearted murderer or I would have walked away as soon as I heard his name.
Instead, I am caught deeper in this web and the spider will be coming to get me now that I have made myself known.
