I can’t believe that 2024 is almost coming to an end! What an amazing year it has been for new books and all the books I was able to read. With over 50 books read, I had a lot of books to choose from and have chosen my ten favorite books that I read in 2024!

My goal coming into this year was to read 60 books and I am very close to this goal. Hopefully I do hit it and will try my best to. But this article will be about the books that I did read this year. And I started the year with one of the best books of 2023.

  • The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store

Starting off the year with The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride is a double-edged sword. This is an incredible novel and it melted my heart and I wanted to recommend this book to everyone. James McBride is an author that everyone should read because his stories are uplifting and are written in a way that when everything comes together, you want to yell in excitement.

But because this novel is amazing, the book that follows after won’t be as good most likely. But I was able to avoid this problem by having a bunch of books lined up after and did come across some that I loved for their own reasons.

  • Tokyo Ueno Station

One of the recent trends that I have been doing is reading a Japanese novel. I came across Tokyo Ueno Station by Yū Miri, Morgan Giles (Translator) on a list of must read Japanese books and I was awestruck with the writing style and the message that Miri conveys in this short novel. Even months later, this novel was occupying a space on my mind and I loved learning about Japanese culture and history and a point of view that isn’t covered enough.

  • Killers of the Flower Moon

There are some movies that make me learn about a book and make me want to read them. And this year, I was eager to read Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann after watching the movie and the book was a different experience. The movie was great but the book by Grann focuses more on the Native American tribe and shares their point of view and digs even deeper into this horrible moment that was forgotten until the movie brought it back to the spotlight.

  • The Fifth Season

There is always going to be a book or a series that will make you realize that you were missing out on an incredible work of literature. For me, that was The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin and I hate that I was supposed to read it earlier but kept pushing it back every time. The Fifth Season is easily the best fantasy novel I have read in years and I still can’t get over it. This is a series that I feel like I will be visiting often in the coming years.
