It is impossible to keep track of all the books releasing in a three-month span. By separating them into genres, we hope it makes it easier for everyone reading this. We love historical fiction novels and every year, there are always a few standouts that everyone should read.
We may have one of those novel In this list as James by Percival Everett is making a lot of noise. But it is only one of the seven books that made the list. You can see the full list below!
The Best Historical Fiction Books Releasing in Spring 2024
- James by Percival Everett
- Cemetery of Untold Stories by Julia Alvarez
- The House on Biscayne Bay by Chanel Cleeton
- Real Americans by Rachel Khong
- Oye by Melissa Mogollon
- All Fours by Miranda July
- Rednecks by Taylor Brown
James

One of the most anticipated books of spring is James by Percival Everett. It is the retelling of Huckleberry Finn through the perspective of Jim, the runaway slave as they travel the Mississippi river. Many readers have found fault of Jim’s portrayal in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Everett gives Jim the voice that we all felt he needed and it may end up being one of the best books of 2024.
Cemetery of Untold Stories
In Cemetery of Untold Stories by Julia Alvarez, writer Alma Cruz returns to the Dominican Republic to bury her stories (yes you read that right). But her manuscripts are coming to life, causing mayhem. I love the ridiculous plot and can’t wait to give this novel a read and see how wild it gets.
The House on Biscayne Bay
A novel that seems to be garnering a lot of attention is The House on Biscayne Bay by Chanel Cleeton. Dual timelines tell the story of Marbrisa, a Florida estate built a little after World War I. Carmen visits the place in 1940 and discovers secrets that dig up its past. Early readers said that it reminded them of gothic novels written by Daphne du Maurier. Whenever your book is compared to a talented author, you are doing something right.
Real Americans
This novel tells the story of a family through three generations. Lily Chen, daughter of scientists who escaped the Mao’s Cultural Revolution, gets married to a rich husband. The book goes forward and back to tell the story of the multigenerational family and the magical elements that surround them.
Stories that tackle a multigenerational family are always interesting when done write. Changing narration at the right time, showing the reader how things happened the way they did for this moment in time to take place is not easy. And it captures the struggle of the people that came before to make a better future present possible.
Oye
Melissa Mogollon’s debut novel Oye is not your typical coming of age novel. Luciana, the daughter of Colombian American parents, is a teenager who is more interested in girls than boys. She doesn’t want to take in her grandmother, Abue, who is removed from reality and can be eccentric at times. But Luciana slowly learns that she has a lot to learn from her grandmother as she enters adulthood.
