Novels That Are Relevent To This Day
The two obvious novels have to be Peter Pan and Tarzan of the Apes. And while many people will know the Phantom of the Opera, few people have read the books. You may have watched the movies but nothing beats the original source material.
Classics That You have to Read

While The Metamorphosis is a short novel, it is worth reading. It is about a man that wakes us as a huge insect. That follows is the inner struggle as well as a family trying to readjust to live as the main provider of the family is unable to. The novel still has many discussions and debates about what the insect is.
James Joyce is a respected author and Dubliners is one of his best works. It is a collection of short stories that depict life of the Irish middle class in and around Dublin. Many of the characters in these short stories show up as minor characters in Ulysses.
