Some novels on this list have sold a ridiculous amount of copies. The Harry Potter series is still going strong two and a half decades later. And then there are other books that still sell a good amount of copies every year. Whether it is a new reader or someone that appreciated the novel, these novels live in our minds and hearts rent free.
I remember when The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown took over the world for a year. It was the book to read. And even know, it still is well known. When a book becomes that successful, it becomes a part of mainstream media and will always be talked about. Sometimes it may be because everybody is talking about it and other times, it may be because that novel is just that good like Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe.

I heartedly disagree with your choice. Notoriety is not a token of literary quality. Don Quixote, Alice in Wonderland, A Pilgrim’s Progress, The Divine Comedy, Crime and Punishment and a dozen others outweigh your list tenfold.
Definetly not an accurate list. Missing are Hemingway’s, The Old Man And The Sea, Pasternak, Doctor Zhivago, Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago, Gibran, The Prophet and many others.

I agree with some titles, however, many left off as mentioned by 2 previous reviews. What about The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis?!?
It’s a well thought out list. Just accept that you cannot satisfy everyone.
Praises to your name for adding these exceptional books to your list. However, I believe that Charles Dickens’ books such as “The Great Expectation” and Virginia Woolf’s “To the Lighthouse” should have been and could have been easily added to that list.
A well thought out list. But how could you miss Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy & Crime & Punishment Fyodor Dostoevsky.
A garbage list. More concerned with “diversity” than accuracy. History is what happened, not what you wish happened or even what should have happened.
For example, in his time one out of every ten people in England and the U.S. was a Dickens reader. Yet Charles Dickens appears nowhere. Neither do greats like Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, George Eliot (a/k/a Mary Ann Evans).
Also, Lolita is listed twice, and The Lord Of The Rings is a trilogy, not a book. Does anyone proofread?
I am 75 years old and was an English major in college. I have read thousands of books in my life (so far), including many of the books on the “Most Famous” list. The following books are not among the most famous, but they are the best books I have ever read:
* Two books by Norman McLean, based on his own experiences: (1) A River Runs Through It, (2) Young Men and Fire.
* Three books about Sir Ernest Shackleton’s 1914 Antarctic Expedition and their attempt to survive when things go wrong: (1) The Endurance by Caroline Alexander, (2) Endurance by Alfred Lansing, and (3) Shackleton’s Boat Journey by F. A. Worsley. These three books should be read in that order. Absolutely incredible reading.
