The Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in the Rye is a is a novel that readers either love or hate. It is a coming of age novel that was unlike anything else published at the time. After revisiting this novel, I do believe it deserves the recognition it has gotten over the decades. There is a lot to take away and the novel is even more relevant in this day and age.
1984
1984 is a classic dystopian novel by George Orwell that imagines a future where the government watches and controls our every movement. The novel is based on Soviet Union in the era of Stalinism, and Nazi Germany. But when Americans realized that their government was secretly spying on them, this novel soared in popularity.
To Kill a Mockingbird

Like many readers, I first read To Kill a Mockingbird in school and couldn’t put the novel down. The story is told by the viewpoint of Jean Louise Finch and tells the story of Atticus Finch defending Tom Robinson, a black man who has been accused of raping a white woman in Maycomb, Alabama.
The Handmaid’s Tale
Another dystopian novel on the list is The Handmaid’s Tale. And just like 1984, it imagines a future people have limited rights and women don’t have reproductive rights. The novel has become one of the most censored novels because of its controversial themes since its release.
The Kite Runner

A novel that has stayed with me ever since I read it is The Kite Runner. It is a powerful novel about two unlikely friends that takes place in Afghanistan, where the regime is collapsing. Hosseini tackles heavy subjects as love, betrayal, family, identity, and redemption.
The Lord of the Ring Trilogy
Lastly, a novel that is important for a different reason is The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It has shaped the fantasy genre and its influence can be seen on hundreds of books. And for many people, this made them love fantasy novels and troupes that are common.
