The Rings of Power Showrunners Discuss What “Didn’t Work” in Season One

Season one of the Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been a monumental success for Amazon but it has had its own issues. Showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay discuss what didn’t work in the first season as they hoped it would.

The pacing of the show has been slow at time and only in Episode 6 does it really pick up. The pair address this in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. One of the big things we learned was even when it’s a small scene, it always has to tie back into the larger stakes,” said Payne. McKay added “There are things that didn’t work as well in season one that might have worked in a smaller show. It has to be about good and evil and the fate of the world or it doesn’t have that epic feeling you want when you’re in Tolkien.”

Season Two provides an opportunity for Payne and McKay to redeem themselves.

The pair said that the show has been a massive learning experience for them and everyone else that has been a part of the show. As the first season comes to a close, Payne and McKay have already set their sets on the next season as filming for season two has already started. Let’s hope the pacing of the show is much better and we don’t have to wait until 75 percent of the season to be over for the show to get interesting. With 8 more episodes on the way, the pair has the opportunity fix the mistakes of season one.
