Today, April 23rd, is World Book Day. What is World Book Day and how did it come to fruition? Keep reading to find out about this unique day!
How World Book Day Was Founded
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) selected April 23rd as World Book and Copyright Day which is also known as World Book Day because it rolls off the tongue much better.
The goal of this day is to promote reading, writing novels and stories, translating, publishing, and copyrights. Yes, it covers a lot of things because it is easier to make them into one day instead of making them have their own holiday. Interestingly enough, the day also celebrates the deaths of two famous authors; Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and William Shakespeare.

World Book Day was founded in 1995 on April 23rd to celebrate reading. More specifically, it was aimed at younger people and to get them to read. We have been saying forever that younger people don’t read as much. Some things don’t change. It depends on being exposed to the right books or they won’t realize the magic of books.
World Book Day 2022 Theme
This year’s World Book Day has a theme. Not sure why but it makes each year different. We don’t do that for any holidays but I guess it doesn’t hurt. The theme for this year is “Read…so you never feel alone.” A nice theme I will say but not sure how one goes about it besides reading, so the same as every year.
Reading is important and yes, that stance from me who runs a book blog is obvious. For the past year, we have seen book banning happen at an unprecedented rate. Even math books are not safe from being banned. That is why raising awareness about reading and writing books is more important than ever before.
UNESCO’s Message for World Book Day 2022
UNESCO’s message for World Book Day 2022 was to cherish books even more during these uncertain times.
“Books have long embodied the human capacity to conjure up worlds, both real and imagined, giving voice to the diversity of human experience,” UNESCO said. “They help us share ideas, obtain information, and inspire admiration for different cultures, enabling far-reaching forms of dialogue between people across space and time.
“This date was a natural choice for UNESCO’s General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone to access books,” the UN agency has said.

For World Book Day 2022, I am reading Song of Radiance by Brandon Clarkson. It is the second novel in the Stormlight trilogy. I definitely wasn’t already reading the novel before this day. As many readers would agree, every day is World Book Day when you love reading! What book are you reading?
